Job Summary
The Department of Event Management, Dining, and Hospitality is one of 13 departments within the Division of Student Affairs. It provides the campus community and guests with high-quality, efficient, and innovative event services and dining options in a variety of settings dedicated to accentuating and enhancing the campus experience in a diverse community.
This position trains and coordinates the work performance of student employees and Culinary Assistants in the areas of guest relations, dining room service, and line service. Persons in this position also manage the point of sales procedures.

Job duties include, but not limited to:
- Supervise and train staff. Coordinate the efforts of employees in keeping service areas cleaned and restocked.
- Maintain adherence to all established safety and sanitation procedures, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Operate cash register and perform customer service duties as needed.
- Assist with placing pans of food on the steam table; prepare all serving areas for service. Supervise and assist in the serving of food. Assist in food preparation when needed.
- Prepare and distribute appropriate reports. Do refund forms and send to the appropriate offices. Complete charge vouchers and meal vouchers, following established procedures.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$18.33 per hour
Required Qualifications
1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Any one or combination totaling one (1) year (12 months) from the categories below:
A. College coursework in any discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
B. Work experience in the serving of food (such as a waiter/waitress), or closely related experience.
3. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in the serving of food (such as a waiter/waitress).
Preferred Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalency.
2. Full knowledge and acceptance of principles of diversity.
3. Supervisory and leadership skills; ability to train and instruct employees; ability to organize, prioritize, and assign duties.
4. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce all policies and procedures, especially those pertaining to sanitation and safety
5. Strong interpersonal skills; cooperative, flexible, and customer-oriented; ability to deal effectively with employee and customer conflicts; ability to produce results working as part of a team or committee.
6. Knowledge of food service methods and equipment; skill in properly serving and interacting with the general public.
7. Computer skills, including menu management systems; accurate record keeping skills.
8. Knowledge of point of sale systems/cash register operation.
9. Current Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate

Must be able to handle multiple responsibilities, work in a crowded and noisy work environment, and work with speed and consistency. This position requires standing, walking, use of fingers and hands, reaching, lifting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, hearing, speaking, and seeing. It also requires the ability to stand for an extended period of time without a significant rest period and the ability to lift 25 lbs. frequently.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
