About the Job

Hire, supervise, train and assign workload for accounting staff in the ALRT Administrative Center. In addition, provide financial leadership, analysis and proactive recommendations and guidance to all departments. The ALRT Center supports the departments and centers including: Anesthesiology, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Advanced Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, Radiology, Center for Magnetic Resonance Research, and Radiation Oncology.

Responsibilities:

50% Supervise Accounting Staff:
* Post, interview, and hire Financial Professionals (Grant/Nonsponsored post award Accountants).
* Train staff with a focus on continuous improvement and growth through coaching and mentoring.
* Conduct performance reviews and correct performance concerns as needed. Provide effective timely and ongoing feedback with goal of continuous improvement and career development.
* Meet regularly with staff to provide guidance and determine individual and department priorities.
* Foster opportunities for information sharing and collaboration.
* Maintain a healthy, safe, and welcoming work environment.
* Ensure employees know and follow policies and procedures.
* Work with department staff and administration or representatives from collegiate and central units such as Medical School Dean's Office, Controller's Office, Sponsored Projects Administration, and Sponsored Financial Reporting on accounting opportunities and questions.
* Define issues, develop solutions and recommend the selection and implementation of the chosen solution.
* Develop policy or procedures to mitigate future risk. Navigate through roadblocks in order to meet objectives.

30% Financial Oversight:
* Communicate strategy for completing finance related tasks, assist with problems solving and dispute resolution, guide Accounting staff on policy and best practices.
* Reporting - monitor and assess production of reports for departments, faculty and administrators
* Budgeting - Manage annual preparation and input of position and detailed budgeting. Verify accuracy and adherence to budget instructions. Balance and submit to college.
* Year End Close - coordinate process to ensure all year end processes are completed timely.
* Sponsored Award Oversight - ensure post-award accounting staff are providing high level support to Principal Investigators (PI). This includes proactively identifying financial risks and opportunities and working with the PI on solutions to avoid financial issues.
* Contracts - Be lead person on reviewing and ensuring University compliance. Also understand and oversee all Center Internal Sales Organizations (ISO) and External Sales Organizations (ESO)
* Audits - Prepare for audits as needed. Review internal controls, compile work product and respond to auditor questions.
* Ensure adequate controls are in place for the administration of all ALRT department travel and purchasing cards.

15% Financial Reporting:
* Provide comprehensive, global financial reports, projections, and budgets for projects, faculty, divisions, or departments at certain time intervals. Identify risks and opportunities with the area being analyzed.
* Ensure reporting workload among direct reports is adequate.
* Other responsibilities may include certified approving of documents, monitoring of faculty accounts, GME (graduate medical education), contract billing, ISO cost accounting, or other duties needed to manage the accounting function in the center including backing up accountants as needed due to openings and absences.
* Duties performed by accountants include providing financial support to Principal Investigator (PI) over the life of the grant (research) or contract. Partner with PI to develop subsequent budgets for multiple year awards. Monitor spending (including labor distribution), approve expenditures, forecast future spending, and analyze/determine root cause and communicate potential deficits. Ensure effort certification is completed by PI within defined deadlines. Ensure grants are closed out properly, issues are resolved with SPA, and approve expenditures that meet the University accounting standards
* Ad hoc reporting may also be required

5% Department Representative and Process Design/Improvement:
* Represent the department on various committees to share expertise, aid in decision making and communicate information back to the department. Take the lead within the department on process design and improvement.
* Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications:
* BA/BS with major in Accounting, Finance, or BA in any field with relevant business and managerial experience plus more than 10 years of accounting/administrative experience, or related education
* Proficiency with relevant computer programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software
* Previous supervisory experience of at least 7 years

Preferred Qualifications:
* Task oriented individual with strong time management skills
* Experience as a grant accountant
* Experience as a certified approver for department expenditures
* Previous relevant experience in a clinical academic setting
* Strong technical, problem solving and process improvement skills
* Analysis skills; ability to gather, organize and present data in a meaningful way
*Strong oral and written communications skills
* Ability to establish solid relationships with business partners
* Excellent teamwork skills
* Ability to take initiative; positive attitude, self-starter

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $106,053-$139,195; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
