Job Summary
Reporting to the Vice Provost/Chief Information Officer, the Associate Chief Information Officer for Academic Applications (ACIO) is a critical leader in the central IT organization. The ACIO leads and manages complex IT solutions that directly support UC Davis' educational mission. Overseeing a portfolio that includes educational and administrative applications, the ACIO ensures the seamless integration and advancement of tools, such as learning management systems, video production, instructional technology design, and student information systems. Additionally, the ACIO plays a key role in supporting faculty by coordinating resources and services, while also managing the technologies that underpin essential university functions like admissions, registration, financial aid, and student services. The ACIO is responsible for creating and executing a comprehensive roadmap for educational technologies, both in the classroom and online. Leveraging a team of experienced managers, the ACIO ensures the development and standardization of enterprise student systems, providing leadership in their maintenance and enhancement to align with institutional needs. This role also oversees the university's electronic accessibility initiatives and fosters collaboration with internal and system-wide stakeholders, including faculty, IT governance councils, and academic departments, ensuring alignment with the university's goals in teaching and accessibility. Specific groups include the Academic Senate, the Office of Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, IT governance councils, the schools and colleges, the Center Educational Effectiveness, the Registrar's Office, the Library, the Student Disability Center, Continuing and Professional Education, and campus academic support units. The ACIO represents the university on various system-wide groups coordinating work in the Educational Technology Leadership Committee and Electronic Accessibility Leadership Team. The mission of IET is to create and support an information technology environment that enhances the ability of the UC Davis community to teach, research and provide public service. IET delivers an infrastructure of technological services appropriate to the requirements of the campus community. Within IET, the Academic Applications unit provides the innovative and essential technology to enhance and support the UC Davis academic experience with a full spectrum of educational technology services and applications.
The ACIO for Academic Applications, in collaboration with faculty and institutional leaders, is responsible for defining and implementing a long-term vision for educational technologies. This role ensures the integration of student information systems across campus, driving innovation and efficiency in support of teaching and learning. Working closely with key stakeholders such as the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Registrar, and Chief Information Security Officer and Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, the ACIO provides leadership in analyzing, deploying, and maintaining enterprise technologies that meet UC Davis' diverse IT needs.
This position addresses complex technological challenges, such as enterprise educational solutions, requiring swift decision-making and risk assessment. With a strong grasp of both current educational technologies and the unique challenges of managing student information systems, the ACIO partners with faculty and administrators to deliver effective classroom and online technology solutions. The ACIO also contributes to the university's budgeting and administrative IT prioritization processes, ensuring optimal allocation of resources for IT initiatives for enterprise applications within central IT and distributed campus departments. Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 10 years of experience managing educational technology within higher education.
- At least 7 years of leadership experience managing midsize to large teams and influencing senior management and stakeholders.
- Proven leadership experience in academic technology, including support for faculty and promoting innovative technologies that enhances student success.
- Experience maintaining currency with technological trends and state-of-the-art information technology applications and approaches, aligning business requirements with technical design.
- Experience managing complex budgets.
- Strong communication, problem solving and leadership skills to clearly and effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders and senior staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 15 years of educational technology experience in higher education.
- Experience implementing an ERP system and managing Banner or similar student information system at a large university.
- Knowledge of higher education structures, policies, procedures and objectives.
- Knowledge of national trends in enterprise application design and support and ability to assess performance to recommend new measures to improve performance.
- Knowledge of educational technology operations including asset, configuration, incident and change management.
Key Responsibilities Academic Application Strategy & Management (75%)
- Establishes the university's technical and functional vision and leads all aspects of educational and administrative technology, including developing and implementing a roadmap for sustainable, flexible, & reliable educational technologies and student information systems to meet current and future business requirements.
- Overall leadership, implementation, and responsibility for campus educational technologies including learning management systems, video management systems, student response systems, video production, and graphic design.
- Overall leadership, implementation, and responsibility for campus student information systems including the Banner student system, Integrated Curriculum Management System, campus developed web-service applications, and electronic document management system.
- Works in close collaboration with the Office of the University Registrar, student service department, and academic and administrative departments.
- Oversees and provides leadership to enterprise projects, ensuring that projects can deliver the benefits outlined in business cases and meet reasonable expectations.
- Directs the end-to-end integration of software components to support the effective and efficient delivery of services across the university.
- Leads, directs and assumes programmatic responsibility for the teams responsible for enterprise student applications, instructional technology and instructional design.
- Leads, directs, and assumes programmatic responsibility for the Enterprise Application teams providing mission critical information technology services to the campus.
- Organizes the department's staff and resources for optimal results. Supervises, coaches and mentors managers and staff under direct report.
- Actively supports UC Davis' commitment to diversity. Supports and ensures compliance with policies on equal opportunity, affirmative action and diversity.
- Responsible for fiscal management of assigned units.
- Reviews budget requests and supporting documentation and prepares budgetary analysis and recommendations.
- Acts as a good steward of the university's resources and ensures control of IT departmental budgets.
- Plans, prepares, and manages budget.
Policy, Process & Procedure Development (25%)
- Leads the development and implementation of standard operating procedures and policies with an emphasis on maintaining and ensuring operation continuity and security of the university's information assets as it relates to academic and student enterprise applications.
- Leads university-wide IT disaster recovery and business resumption planning, testing, and implementation pertaining to information applications. Develops and implements IT processes in asset management, change management, incident management, and configuration management.

Work Environment The incumbent in this senior position must reside in California. This is a Hybrid role, requiring on-site presence and travel to and from campus as needed, with occasional overnight travel.
