Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Newborn Hearing Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes

  • Administers Otoacoustic Emission screenings in the newborn nursery.
  • Administers Automated ABR screenings in the newborn and intensive care nurseries.
  • Identifies risk-factors for early onset hearing loss.
  • Documents HUMC EHDI screening results in the patient record.
  • Provides newborn hearing screening results to parents/primary caregivers via face-to-face
  • Communicates abnormal screening results and risk factors to the Audiologists.
  • Maintains newborn hearing screening equipment and ensures annual calibration, per NJ EHDI
  • Maintains supplies for the HUMC EHDI program.
  • Maintains the HUMC EHDI database and tickle file for recalling patients in need of follow-up testing.
  • Provides Audiometry support for Audiologists as required.
  • Performs ancillary audiometric tests (OAEs, tympanometry, ANSI testing) as directed by an
  • Assists with obtaining records for verifying billing/coding.
  • Audits daily nursery census to ensure every baby has a hearing screening prior to discharge.
  • Enters data in NJIIS (NJ Immunization Information System).
  • Participates in the annual NJEHDI meeting.
  • Schedules appointments in Medical Center electronic medical record (EPIC Cadence).
  • Works to obtain insurance authorizations, as required and verifies coverage eligibility.
  • Cross trained to complete Birth Certificate documentation.
  • Ensures staffing coverage.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior

Qualifications

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs required.
