TITLE

Technical Lead

JOB SUMMARY

The Technical Lead is responsible for translating information technology infrastructure goals and priorities into actionable plans for technology solutions in their domain of expertise. In this role, they work collaboratively with other areas within IT Solutions to implement new IT infrastructure and evaluate upgrades and enhancements to current IT infrastructure. This position provides technical expertise in specific IT domains to support IT infrastructure implementations and ensure a consistent university experience no matter the location.

As a member of the IT Solutions (ITS) team, the Technical Lead is expected to uphold the division's mission to "empower an agile, digital university and elevate technology as a strategic institutional asset" and contribute positively to a collaborative, human-centered, innovative, accountable, transparent, and inclusive culture within ITS.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Depending on domain expertise Associate Director for Security & Network Operations, Manager of Platform & Cloud Services, or Manager of End User Computing

Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:

Technical Domain Expertise (75%)



  • Acts as the ITS technical expert in one of the following domains: network & infrastructure, voice services, platform & cloud services, or end user computing.
  • Manages and implements domain-specific IT infrastructure services for all three campuses, including discipline-specific IT infrastructure.
  • Researches and understands current and emergent IT infrastructure needs within their specific domain that would enhance teaching, learning, and administrative functions.
  • Writes domain-specific IT infrastructure technology standards, documentation, and other materials needed to ensure consistent design, implementation, and use of technology across campuses, as well as in new construction and renovation projects.
  • Develops and manages services and/or project-related budgets and participates in developing financial models and multi-year budget projections for infrastructure replacement and maintenance/refresh programs.
  • Regularly reviews and assesses domain-specific IT infrastructure, embedded technology, and related incident tickets to develop solutions to recurring issues and challenges.
  • Provides technical mentoring for other ITS staff in their area.


Project Management (15%)



  • Creates and executes project timelines and work plans relating to university IT infrastructure and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
  • Identifies needed resources and assigns individual responsibilities.
  • Manages day-to-day operational aspects of infrastructure projects and scopes.
  • Prepares for and coordinates engagement reviews and quality assurance procedures.
  • Ensures project documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately.
  • Assists in the development and oversight of project timelines for major construction projects that include domain-specific IT infrastructure.


ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Participation & Support (10%)



  • Maintains awareness of current practices and future trends in domain specific IT infrastructure technology and best practices.
  • Represents IT Solutions and participates in the campus community by serving on working groups, project teams, and university committees.
  • Performs other duties as requested.


EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree required. Additional job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

EXPERIENCE

Seven years of relevant experience in one or more domains of IT infrastructure, including network & infrastructure, voice services, platform & cloud services, or end user computing. Additional job-related education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

Work is performed under general supervision and performance is based on the effective completion of assignments and results obtained. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - The following are essential:



  • Deep expertise in one or more domains of IT infrastructure, including network & infrastructure, voice services, platform & cloud services, or end user computing.
  • Experience managing complex projects.
  • Experience designing and deploying domain-specific technology infrastructure that effectively meets, supports, and appropriately balances end-user and business needs with security, regulatory, and compliance requirements.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, including ability to anticipate, identify, and solve critical problems.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills (including ability to present ideas in user-friendly, business-friendly and technical language) and interpersonal skills with a focus on rapport-building, listening and questioning skills.
  • Ability to build effective relationships and strong commitment to working collegially and collaboratively with constituents at all levels in a diverse and distributed environment.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment, including related university software and email.


Additional/Desirable Skills & Abilities



  • Nationally recognized certification in one or more specific domains of IT expertise.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Familiarity with Texas Administrative Code (TAC 202).


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee may be required to travel. Ability to lift up to 50lbs and use a ladder as necessary. May be required to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
