The basics of this position:

The Coordinator, Student Retention Programs will be part of a dynamic and visionary team of leaders in the division of Student Affairs. The Coordinator will provide inclusive, growth mindset leadership, innovative vision, and a commitment to key programs in the division, as well as retention and completion goals/initiatives with all constituents throughout the College. The ideal candidate is someone with positive and productive experience working with colleagues to design, implement, and assess successful retention programs. In addition to being knowledgeable about the goals and metrics outlined for retention, progression, and equity as detailed in the College's Strategic Plan, 2021-2023 the ideal candidate will be ready to scale up successful programs already in place. With research and data, the ideal candidate will be able to propose programming that will increase our students' completion, understanding that a large percentage of our students are part-time. This position will promote, coordinate, and manage the Black Male Achievers Academy.

What you'll do:



  • Meets with students who are at risk.
  • Support retention and progression programs, including academic coaching, early alert, peer mentoring, and other initiatives designed to facilitate successful course and academic program completion.
  • Be highly accessible to individual students, groups of students, and student organizations as an advisor and mentor.
  • Provides vision and direction for retention initiatives with a particular focus on African American males and serve as an advocate for the interests of traditionally underrepresented students, including connection to related student support services.
  • Promote, coordinate and manage the Black Male Achievers Academy.
  • Collaborates with and provides consultation to the College community related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including minority male academic success and retention.
  • Engages in identifying and addressing institutional barriers to student retention and graduation, specifically for minority males.
  • Conducts meetings and workshops related to academic preparation, career pathways, and counseling referrals.
  • Evaluates student aptitudes, abilities, and interests to advise them regarding current trends in career and academic placement.
  • Provides and facilitates training across multiple dimensions of diversity through program development and collaboration in both Academic and Student Affairs departments.
  • Assists with recruitment and retention initiatives by establishing and maintaining partnerships to create a pipeline of students to STLCC campuses.
  • Provides intrusive, intentional, and proactive case management to assigned students.
  • Adopts STLCC's Student Success Advising Framework, from entry to completion, in carrying out appropriate services, resources, and intervention strategies for students.
  • Identifies and delivers strategies for assigned students to enhance their experience and contribute to improved retention, persistence, and graduation rates for students.
  • Assists in the new student orientation process.
  • Educates students on their academic standing and provides advice on building a plan towards good academic standing.
  • Provides students with strategies related to academic progress and work/life/study balance.
  • Draws upon the services of Student and Academic Affairs units to assist students in resolving problems.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Education, experience, and other requirements:



  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years in a related field or easily translated to the field or relevant experience in higher education, programming, student development related to minority students.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Demonstrate commitment and skills in issues related to equity and excellence.
  • Case management experience in supporting African American males in pursuing their desired life outcomes by facilitating access to support services.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills (e.g. coordinating programs or activities, initiating new services, leading workgroups)
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community.
  • Experience and proficiency in current counseling, teaching, and learning technologies.
  • Demonstrated passion for, and experience with, counseling and teaching a diverse student body with a broad spectrum of socioeconomic means and academic preparation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • A dynamic personality and a strong desire to transform and improve the lives of African American males.
