Medical Director - Outpatient Behavioral Health
UMass Memorial Health-Harrington
  • Oversight of large continuum of outpatient services, including multiple clinics for adults and pediatrics, addiction, Partial Hospital Programs, Intensive Outpatient Program, Opioid Treatment Program, and Neuromodulation services
  • Supervise providers (MDs and NPs) involved in all of these areas
  • Member of Behavioral Health Leadership Team including Vice President, Chief of Psychiatry, Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatry, Director of Nursing, Director of Operations, and Director of Outpatient.
  • Leads monthly outpatient prescribers meeting
  • Works closely with Vice President of Behavioral Health and Director of Outpatient Services to support and enhance existing services as well as develop new services based on need
  • Along with Vice President, Medical Director of Outpatient will be involved in the integration and creation of system-wide Behavioral Health services, working closely with other hospital Medical Directors and department directors
  • Consultation to community medical providers, assessment of complex cases, and ongoing treatment of identified patients

I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Ensuring proper dosage and delivery of medication to patients and corresponding supervision of mid-level providers in the recovery division
2. Responsible for the delivery of medication assisted treatment
3. Development of prescribing methodology in the various programs
4. Continuous improvement and review of protocols for treatment options in recovery service

Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:

2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Board Certified, or Board Eligible, in Psychiatry
2. Active Massachusetts Medical License
3. Active Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration
4. Active DEA Certification

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. 2+ years' experience as psychiatrist
2. Experience working among other hospital departments
3. Knowledge of risk management and quality assurance processes
4. Familiarity with accreditation process, experience with dual diagnosis and a myriad of different medication assisted treatments for addiction as well as co-occurring mental health disorders
5. Minimum of six months of clinical experience with alcohol and other drug-dependent persons or 40 hours of documented continuing education credit in treating addicted persons within the first 12 months of employment.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
