Department Background:

In the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Department of Entomology is located on both the Ithaca and Geneva campus. Their mission is threefold: To pursue studies to understand basic and applied aspects of insect biology; to provide a robust and modern curriculum as part of preeminent undergraduate and graduate programs; and to inform and educate the public about the issues related to insects and other arthropods. The Department of Entomology has 30 faculty and senior academics in Ithaca and 14 within the Geneva campus.

Position Summary:

This position is for a Technician II who will assist with research on insect ecology and pest management. The technician will split their time between the Willden and Rivera labs that focus on controlled environment agriculture and apple systems, respectively. Drs. Willden and Rivera will be equal supervisors on a wide variety of routine to moderately complex technical laboratory and field experiments. Laboratory techniques to be employed will include but are not limited to providing standard care for insect and mite colony maintenance, supporting work on basic behavioral and biological assays, insect and mite identification, pest management efficacy trials, and other techniques and procedures as necessary. The position involves cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment and overall laboratory hygiene. The technician will also be expected to assist in seasonal field research that would involve setting up field trials (field preparation, planting, and plant maintenance) and travel to research sites on the AgriTech campus to record and collect data. The technician will also be expected to assist in database development, maintaining standard laboratory records and other responsible data management functions. They will also be expected to analyze preliminary data using straightforward statistical methods and software. The technician will also have the opportunity to assist with the preparation of manuscripts.

This is a full time (39 hours per week), twelve-month term appointment with possibility of renewal based on secured funding and successful performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Minimum education and experience equivalency: High school Diploma and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift 20-50 pounds.
  • Must be punctual, reliable and able to occasionally work irregular hours only as necessary.
  • Must have experience working with insect bioassays and data collection.
  • Must be proficient in basic database and word processing programs.
  • Must be an enthusiastic learner and capable of exercising some degree of independence within specific bounds.
  • Must maintain safety protocol and procedures at all times, especially when working with chemicals.
  • Must be able to work outdoors and follow field safety protocol to be discussed with the supervisors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in statistical analyses in R, Excel, or other software.
