Preferred Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Education, Environmental Education, Natural Resources, Outdoor Education, Science, or related field.
- Experience working with youth and adults in traditional, nontraditional, and/or outdoor education setting.
- Experience in marine aquaria and live reptile husbandry.
- Experience leading kayak tours.
- FA/CPR, Lifeguard, ACA Canoe/Kayak certification or willingness to obtain.

Position Summary |
Full time Program Specialist/Environmental Educator position at 4-H Tidelands Nature Center, a Georgia 4-H program facility located on Jekyll Island, GA. This is highly responsible work in program delivery and operation. Successful candidate will lead coastal ecology programs, oversee live animal exhibit care, and assist Tidelands Coordinator in the day-to-day operation of 4-H Tidelands program facility. Programs and live exhibits focus on marine ecosystems and include topics such as marsh & beach ecology, herpetology, invertebrate studies, sea turtles, etc. The position is responsible for assisting in the operation of the 4-H Tidelands including, but not limited to: live animal care, aquaria/exhibit maintenance and repair, working with general public in live exhibit gallery, teaching coastal ecology/environmental education classes, leading kayak tours/canoe programs, opening/closing the center, completing daily visitor and financial reports, communication with program staff and volunteers, light facility maintenance/cleaning/ landscaping, exhibit updates/repair. Includes regular weekends, occasional evening work, occasional off-site community events/programs. This position includes strenuous activity such as extended hours in the sun and on water as well physical demands such as walking, kayaking, lifting, etc. |

- Experience with aquaria and live animal exhibit care/husbandry.
- Experience with aquaria, filters, tanks, carpentry and electric motors.
- Ability to comply with and provide proper animal care as well as maintain and organize animal care records.
- Ability to maintain regular daily/weekly/monthly feeding and maintenance schedules for live animal exhibits.
- Ability to troubleshoot/address concerns related to animal care as well as kayak equipment as they arise. Successfully complete ACA paddling instruction course and participate in on-going kayak training.
- Ability to lead/train others to lead safe and educational kayak tours.
- Experience in teaching coastal ecology programs.
- Ability to teach and relate well with others, including, students, teachers, staff, etc.
- Ability to organize, multi-task, prioritize tasks.
- Experience with computer software, hardware, website maintenance, social media, etc.

Physical Demands |
- This position includes strenuous activity and physical demands such as extended time in the sun while teaching outdoors and/or leading kayak tours, carrying out grounds maintenance.
- Bend, lift and carry kayaks (55 to 70 pounds) to and from the water, and on and off the trailer.
- Perform kayak/canoe rescue maneuvers under various water conditions.
- Bend, stoop, squat, lift and climb in caring for live animal exhibits.
- Climb a ladder, along with other physical demands related to equipment, facility, grounds, and/or exhibit maintenance related needs.
- Driving as needed to perform job duties.
