The Oncology Nurse Specialist is a registered professional nurse who demonstrates clinical expertise through advanced education, knowledge, and skills in area of practice and clinical nursing specialization at Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC). Provides expert clinical advice and instruction to nursing staff, patients and families, and other health care providers using advanced nursing knowledge and skills. Participates in the consultation, clinical teaching, staff development, staff orientation and evaluation for the designated area. Actively participates in a professional nursing organization and hospital wide initiatives. Ensures the delivery of patient care supports the mission, philosophy, and goals of the Department of Nursing and HUMC.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Oncology Nurse Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Provides patient care, applying advanced clinical skills and critical thinking to ensure optimal outcomes of clinical outcomes.
- Provides support and acts as a clinical resource for staff: monitor clinical practice to ensure compliance with established standards.
- Supports the assessment of the appropriate patient care through assessment, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the delivery of patient care.
- Collaborates with Directors of Nursing, Nurse Managers, and Nurse Educators in assessing the educational needs of staff and development of professional goals. Plans and implements educational programs.
- Coaches staff in their own professional development, assists in the performance appraisal and competency assessment process.
- Demonstrates professional involvement by participating in workshops, journal club, seminars, and grand rounds fostering review and discussion of research current articles as a presenter or member.
- Participates in the development and implementation of continuous quality improvement programs, Quality Assurance (QA)/Performance Improvement (PI) activities that include but are not limited to the chemotherapy verification process.
- Applies evidence-based practice to make clinical decisions and establish standards of clinical specialty.
- Identifies nursing research questions and collaborates with nurse leaders to implement Evidence-based Practice (EBP).
- Directly participates and/or supports the professional nursing organization and shared clinical decision-making process.
- May act as a preceptor to graduate students.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Currently enrolled in a Master of Science in Nursing program.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in oncology nursing.
- Current valid NJ State Professional Registered Nurse license.
- Certification in the area of clinical practice.
- Maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Compliance Professional (HCP) certification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
- Master's degree preferred
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification preferred
