Job Summary:



Seeking a full-time, Research Services Entry Professional to join a research laboratory within the Department of Craniofacial Biology, School of Dental Medicine. The successful candidate will be a key contributor to numerous research projects addressing skeletal development and disease. The laboratory uses the zebrafish model to understand basic science mechanisms relating to developmental genetics. The successful candidate will receive training in genetic, developmental, and molecular techniques.

The candidate will be trained to perform the following duties: oversee the laboratory zebrafish colony, perform zebrafish husbandry and genotyping via PCR, prepare common solutions and stocks, maintain laboratory databases, place laboratory orders and oversee laboratory compliance, assist in molecular cloning, perform quantitative RT-PCR, prepare common solutions and stocks, maintain laboratory databases. The candidate is encouraged to manage an independent project, including designing experiments, optimizing protocols and analyzing data, and will meet regularly with the PI. The employee will be primarily involved in basic science research studies investigating craniofacial anomalies.

Key Responsibilities



  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas.
  • Maintain laboratory databases, place laboratory purchase orders, reconcile credit card receipts, and contribute to laboratory compliance.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects and prepare common solutions and stocks.
  • Support laboratory research including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results.
  • Perform zebrafish husbandry.
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions
  • Additional responsibilities may include independent experiments that contribute to the laboratory's goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Professional:



  • A bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.




Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Conditions of Employment: Must be willing and able to...



  • Must be willing and able to work with laboratory zebrafish.
  • Lift, push and / or pull up to 20lbs
  • Work in an environment that may expose you to chemicals and liquid nitrogen.
  • Frequently wash your hands, as biohazardous materials may be present.
  • Sit and stand for long periods of time, frequently walk, and bend/stoop, as well as execute repetitive motions.
  • Work with complex and sharp laboratory equipment, and various chemical and biological solutions.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment when handling biological samples and hazardous chemicals.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Six months of zebrafish husbandry experience.

  • Excellent communication, organizational skills, record-keeping abilities and attention to detail.
  • Highly motivated and able to work as part of a team within a research laboratory environment.
  • Able to clearly and effectively communicate with the research team
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.
  • Ability to troubleshoot experiments.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to be adaptable, flexible, and to think on your feet.
  • Supportive and conscientious work ethic.
  • Ability to follow direction of the PI, follow laboratory and department Standard Operating Procedures and department policies.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The hiring range for this position has been established as:

Entry Laboratory Professional: $45,000 - $52,650

The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
