About the Job

This position includes night shifts, holiday and weekends, with monthly daytime meetings required. Initial training (3-4 weeks) will be during daytime hours.

100% Donor Coordination:

  • Obtain and analyze donors past medical history and current medical circumstances to decide if tissue is suitable for procurement for transplant or research on a case-by-case basis.
  • Determine potential donors' eligibility based upon Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA), and Minnesota Lions Eye Bank (MLEB) standards.
  • Accurately enter donor information into database; ensure donor chart documentation is complete. Check state or regional donor registries to determine if donors previously completed documentation self-designating themselves as donors.
  • Approach grieving donor families (via telephone) within hours of death and present the option of eye donation or disclose first person consent. Be compassionate to family in a crisis situation.
  • Acquire legal, informed authorization for eye donation and donor medical/social history from knowledgeable person(s) including family and/or healthcare agent.
  • Provide guidance and resources to ensure that eye tissue is procured, transported, and received in a manner that maintains viability for transplantation.
  • Control flow of case management; both before and after recovery to maximize quality and viability of tissue.
  • Identify and establish priorities when controlling work-flow and tissue supply.
  • Multi-task effectively to maximize donation opportunities, ensure tissue viability, and help partners in donation meet their timelines (autopsy, other donation agencies, etc.).
  • Consult supervisor, technical or medical director, physicians who treat donors, and funeral directors as needed.
  • Resolve problems encountered during routine daily activities independently or with little supervision.
