Senior Director of PAE Resource and Budget Planning

The University of Pittsburgh's Division of Philanthropic & Alumni Engagement (PAE) cultivates relationships with contributors, alumni, and other constituents on behalf of the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC, generating support for teaching, research, and care. The Senior Director of PAE Resource and Budget Planning (Sr. Director, RBP) is a financial leader and key member of the Philanthropic Alumni and Engagement (PAE) leadership team who reports to the Chief PAE Strategy Officer and Vice Chancellor. The Sr. Director, RBP provides financial leadership to advance PAE's mission, strategic goals, priorities, and operating objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Financial Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a multi-year budget and financial planning framework aligned with strategic goals.
  • Integrate future resource needs into financial forecasts and advocate for funding.
  • Facilitate inclusive and transparent budget planning processes.
  • Present financial recommendations and status reports to leadership.
  • Provide strategic guidance and regular financial updates to leaders.
  • Develop forecasting and long-range planning initiatives.

Budget Planning and Development:

  • Manage the annual budget cycle and coordinate budget planning activities.
  • Oversee diverse revenue streams, including UPMC and Medical Health and Sciences Foundation.
  • Create operational efficiencies to meet University targets.
  • Provide key information for planning and decision-making.
  • Implement a position budget management process.
  • Analyze budget needs and trends, monitor performance, and direct corrective actions.

Fiscal Management and Operational Oversight:

  • Lead a budget team and educate staff on financial issues.
  • Evaluate the financial position of departments and formulate analytical approaches.
  • Oversee workflow and assess business systems and procedures.
  • Promote financial awareness and responsibility within PAE.
  • Identify and resolve budgetary and financial issues.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Become a subject matter expert in PAE functions to find synergies.
  • Encourage collaboration with other functional areas.
  • Coordinate budget activities and develop best practices.
  • Lead and staff working groups on key budget and operational topics.

Job Summary

Externally funded (e.g., multi-million dollar grants, contracts, gifts) via the programs the position directs. Leads teams and directs industry, government, and foundation partnering business development and alliance management strategy. Oversees strategic planning and creates actionable objectives. Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to advance partnering outcomes. Develops and improves policies and procedures and oversees budget development, maintenance, and reporting.


Essential Functions
  • Effective communication skills to establish rapport at all levels of PAE and the University.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning, resource management, and aligning resources with strategy.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making abilities in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills for interpreting financial and organizational data.
  • Advanced quantitative financial and budget analysis skills, including financial modeling.
  • Ability to advocate for PAE resources and serve as an advisor.
  • Flexible, interculturally competent, and collegial leadership style.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, leveraging data for informed decisions.
  • Understanding of higher education funding complexities and fostering financial transparency.
  • Ability to drive change and support PAE's financial and operational needs.

Physical Effort

Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary. May be required to move objects up to 25 pounds occasionally.
