Job Summary

Under general supervision this position performs and supervises all functions at the Circulation desk using the library's automated circulation system and supports the Access and Delivery Services department of the UC Davis Library. This position is responsible for making and implementing all decisions necessary to provide full operation of the UC Davis Library Circulation and Welcome desks at Shields Library; ensuring Library security and patron safety; and resolving equipment and related problems. Assists in the training of other Access and Delivery Services desk staff in all circulation procedures.

Collaborate with other staff members on projects and work needed to further the progress of the circulation services as well as participate in library-wide committees. Participates in the analysis and development of new procedures that relate to Circulation functions. Independent judgment is critical in interpreting and applying policy to situational discussions with patrons. Assists as backup in most billing functions. Serves as back-up for opening/closing Shields Library. Interprets and enforces unit, department, and library policy/procedure.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience functioning effectively as a supervisor or work leader, with skills to hire, train, direct and evaluate student employees.
  • Experience interacting with a diverse patron and student population, delivering compassionate, customer-centric service in a high-volume, deadline driven environment, answering questions and solving problems.
  • Experience using Windows, MS Office, and cloud-based tools (e.g. Google Drive) to create, update, and organize files.
  • Experience using analytical and organizational skills to set priorities, balance workloads, apply critical analysis, make decisions and solve problems.
  • Experience executing projects including implementing new policies and procedures and suggesting improvements to work procedures and policy.
  • Skills to exercise independent judgment to make appropriate decisions, establish priorities, solve problems, and exercise flexibility and creativity in adapting routines and coordinating with other UC Davis Library units to consistently apply policy.
  • Knowledge of general library functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in experience.
  • Experience working in an academic or similar library setting.
  • Experience with public service modules in an integrated library system, ex. Alma.
  • Experience with Access Services operations and practices in an academic library setting, including service goals, priority expectations & knowledge of Circulation practices, codes, policies, and procedures.
  • Supervisory skills to train, motivate, counsel, and discipline a diverse workforce to provide positive and responsive service in a high-pressure public service environment.
  • Organizations skills to organize a fluctuating workload for self and staff while meeting short-term deadlines, conflicting priorities and frequent interruptions in a manner that promotes cooperation in a team-oriented environment.
