HAVEN Helping Abusive Violence Ends Now program, Full Time/ 40 Hours, Chelsea Health Center



  • Provides clinical services to hospital patientsand employees impacted by intimate partner violence (IPV). Works effectively as a member of HAVEN team and on interdisciplinary teams as assigned. Provides IPV training, consultation, and debriefing to social workers and providers of other disciplines within the Hospital and community.
  • Facilitates coordination of services to individuals and families. Participates in Hospital, departmental, and community task forces and/or committees.
  • Hybrid schedule possible for potentially one day remote per week.


Job Description

Patient Population:



  • Using a holistic approach, each advocate develops and gains knowledge of patient and employee populations at the Hospital and Health Centers, understanding that individuals of all ages, genders, sexualities, races, ethnicities, socioeconomic classes, immigration statuses, and other complex, diverse identities can experience intimate partner violence.


Clinical Practice:



  • As part of the HAVEN team, advocate is responsible for rotating on-call duties, which include completing phone intakes; responding in-person to new referrals from the Emergency Department, Urgent Care, inpatient floors, walk-ins, and outpatient clinics; and engaging in consultations with providers. Responds promptly to requests for consultation/services from Hospital and Health Center providers. Screens individuals who are referred or who request services.
  • Provides assessments of individuals impacted by intimate partner violence. Helps assess level of personal risk for individual and family and collaborates to create individualized safety plans. Develops goals and plans of care with individuals based on duration of services and appropriate interventions. Assesses for additional clinical services, such as behavioral health, substance use, and/or medical interventions. Refers and facilitates connections to internal Hospital/Health Center resources and external community resources. May accompany individuals as needed to medical appointments and/or appointments with community-based systems such as court or housing.
  • Strives to employ a range of trauma-informed and culturally humble clinical services in multiple languages: multilingual, multicultural advocates may provide services in their languages and all advocates may use Hospital interpreter services. HAVEN clinical services may include individual advocacy, safety planning, crisis intervention, psychoeducation, counseling related to IPV, referral to internal and external resources, accompaniment, and group services. Advocates on behalf of individuals to gain access to services and resources. Assists individuals with navigating multiple systems. Commits to continued learning and employee training in the areas of IPV, relevant health care developments, gender-based violence, anti-racism work, and other forms and systems of oppression.
  • Creates curriculum for and facilitates support groups and short-term psychoeducational workshops for survivors of IPV.
  • Formulates case presentations from an empowerment/strength-based model. Presents and discusses clinical work in formal and informal case reviews, seminars, and inter/intra-departmental case meetings. Facilitates HAVEN team meetings.
  • Provides clinical consultation and expertise to Hospital and Health Center providers and employees, interdisciplinary teams, Hospital committees, and other collateral community agencies. Works with providers to develop best practices for supporting individuals in a medical setting, including in areas such as screening for IPV, conducting telehealth visits with individuals experiencing IPV, and appropriately documenting about IPV in the medical record.
  • Participates in program evaluation research and focus groups as needed by gathering data and assisting with research design and data analysis. Responsible for documentation and data collection through ETO, MOVA, and EPIC.
  • Engages with growth and enrichment opportunities as able, including working on specialized projects, participating in department- and Hospital-wide committees, and supervising and training HAVEN interns.


Teaching and Education:



  • Assesses individuals' learning styles, need for psychoeducation, and readiness. Provides trauma-informed, empowerment-based psychoeducation on safety planning, Hospital and community resources, impacts of IPV, and other topics.
  • May mentor and/or supervise staff. Provides formal and informal training within the department and during Hospital seminars, workshops, and rounds.


Collaboration:



  • Works as member of multidisciplinary IPV program with strong collaborative ties to Employee Assistance Program, Child Protection Team, Police and Security, Emergency Department, Medicine/Specialties, Nursing, Occupational Health, Health Centers, and other departments throughout the institution.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with institutions and community organizations, including shelters, police departments, courts, schools, District Attorneys' offices, Department of Children and Families (DCF), housing, immigration, and other assistance programs. Regularly participates in community meetings, including meetings held by Jane Doe, Revere CARES, DCF DV Round Table, Chelsea HUB, Regional Housing Solutions, Casa Myrna Legal Partnership, and others.


Organizational/Administrative Skills:



  • Responsible for own administrative duties, including timely and appropriate documentation in ETO and EPIC, timely and accurate daily reporting of activities via ETO, and accurate reporting of time worked.
  • Attends, participates in, and facilitates program meetings, team meetings, and staff meetings.
  • Participates in Departmental and Hospital committees per preference and as able.

  • Participates in supervision/consultation as appropriate to level of professional development.

Commits to continued learning and employee training in the areas of IPV, relevant health care developments, gender-based violence, anti-racism work, and other forms and systems of oppression.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS



  • Master's of Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program required.
  • Require current Massachusetts Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or must obtain MA Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) within 4 months of hire date.
  • 1-3 years direct work experience with survivors of intimate partner violence preferred..
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the role of intimate partner violence advocacy in a hospital or healthcare center setting and to work in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and anti-racism work.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ending intimate partner violence, gender-based violence, and other forms and systems of oppression.
  • Experience in providing expert consultation and training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills enabling effective team collaboration



SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED



  • Understanding of intimate partner violence and its impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Understanding the impact of intimate partner violence on individual health and health care delivery. Understanding of overlap of intimate partner violence with substance use, medical illness, and psychiatric illness.
  • Demonstrates competency in understanding intimate partner violence in the context of race, class, gender, sexuality, culture, religion, immigration status, and other diverse identities.
  • Ability to provide intimate partner violence assessments and short-term and long-term advocacy interventions with individuals and groups. Safety planning and crisis intervention skills.
  • Knowledge of community agencies and resources. Ability to advocate within systems on behalf of clients.
  • Excellent communication skills, including experience and comfort with public speaking/training.
  • Demonstrates skill in complex problem-solving, advocacy, and conflict resolution.
  • Documents according to departmental policies and procedures in EPIC and ETO.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to collaborate, consult, and educate.


WORKING CONDITIONS



  • Advocate provides care on patient care units and in ambulatory offices. Advocate accompanies patients to medical appointments and community appointments as needed. Based on-site at one of our locations, advocate is also responsible for coverage of other sites as needed.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY



  • May mentor or teach as assigned by the Leadership Team.
