Job Summary

Job Summary

Under general supervision, direct the UC Davis Mouse Biology Program's project management, repository, and customer service teams, including oversight of materials (mice, cells) and information receiving, project management, and archiving mouse models enrolled in or received for NIH grant projects for production, phenotyping, and archiving. Interact directly with MBP customers and staff, UCD researchers and staff, other academic researchers and staff, NIH personnel, and representatives of public and private industries. Coordinate and supervise work among several Mouse Biology Program laboratories, and prepare, analyze, and present collected data.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Biological Sciences.
  • Experience and success in managing a translational research and resource program, including organizing data for reporting and cost analysis, developing goals and milestones, assessing measurements of success, and providing feedback.
  • Experience building collaborations between academia, industry, and government agencies, including outreach, providing cost estimates, discussing alternate methods, and making recommendations when project concerns arise.
  • Experience supervising multiple lab personnel at various levels, handling conflict, writing position descriptions, conducting interviews and hiring, and writing performance evaluations including providing feedback, goals, and expectations.
  • Experience working with hazardous materials, including with BSL2 tissue and mice, handling liquid nitrogen, maintaining LN2 freezers and materials preserved in liquid nitrogen, and ensuring all safety requirements are observed in yourself and others.
  • Skill to prepare for and participate in meetings and teleconferences, including strong negotiation skills and verbal and written communication skills; skills to influence / persuade all levels of staff.
  • In-depth knowledge of mouse strains, mouse husbandry, mouse strain nomenclature, techniques used to create modified mouse strains, and ability to read the genetic testing reports for mutant mouse strains including gathering information, write grant applications including methods, present scientific data at small and large-scale meetings, and write new, or update existing, standard operating procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate level education or equivalent experience, with emphasis on genetics.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of the work performed in the Mouse Biology Program, and ability to make decisions on mouse models withregards to the work produced by each lab.
  • Skills to train others in use of colony management, project tracking, LIMS, and billing system databases.
  • Knowledge to research and make recommendations on, and place purchasing requests for, laboratory equipment.

Department Overview

Coordinates and establishes goals and objectives for achievements of subordinate staff to obtain organizational objectives with autonomy. Manages accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and physical resources in compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors and staff adhere to defined internal controls. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental success. Independently manages and provides technical direction in conjunction with faculty director for a complex academic, research, service, and resource program of high visibility, including the Mutant Mouse Resource and Research Center (MMRRC), Knockout Mouse Production and Phenotyping Project (KOMP2), Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center Live (MMPCLive), and Mouse Biology Shared Resource (MBSR) of the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. Develops policies and procedures, as well as managing ongoing operations of these aforementioned programs, and assists the MBP Director with oversight of large operational budgets to achieve objectives. Responsible for recruiting and retaining industry leaders to partner with research and resource programs in achievement of MBP goals. Uses highly specialized expertise in research, resource, and academic concepts and objectives. Provides input as part of the Senior Leadership Group (SLG) to develop policies and procedures program wide, develop strategic plan for financing the program to ensure ongoing sustainability of the program. Assists the Director in writing grant applications, assembling preliminary data, and preparing grant budgets.

Work Environment

Work flexible schedule with occasional evenings and weekends, on-call for equipment alarms. Participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs.
