GENERAL SUMMARY: Evaluates and examines gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens to ensure specimen adequacy and to identify precancerous, malignant, infectious and other pathologic conditions. Works independently performing all cytologic procedures, both technical and clerical, including quality control and specimen preparation/processing. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Accurately evaluates specimens from different anatomic sites for interpretation utilizing appropriate criteria and maintains established performance standards. 3. *Applies established cytomorphologic criteria for gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. 4. *Ensures specimens from various anatomic sites are correctly collected and utilizes appropriate preparation, processing and evaluation procedures for al specimens, slides and data in compliance with all state and federal regulatory agencies. 5. Adheres to established workload limits and accurately records and documents all slides examined, including interpretation of each case reviewed, total number of slices reviewed and number of hours spent examining slides in each 24 hour period. 6. Observes established safety policies and maintains a clean laboratory environment. 7. Performs and evaluates established quality control procedures/maintenance; implements corrective action when indicated. 8. Works productively and efficiently during scheduled work hours as assigned by supervisor. 9. *Attention to detail in specimen identification, diagnoses and all record keeping. 10. Proficient in Laboratory Information System (LIS) applications and basic word processing and spreadsheet applications. 11. Able to adequately perform the role as a laboratory assistant as required. 12. Maintains confidentiality of patient and specimen information. 13. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 14. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned. 15. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. (Essential Job functions are marked with an asterisk "*". Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies. 2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 3. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 4. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes. 5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff. 6. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills. 7. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information. 8. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision. 9. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Science Degree and a graduate from an American Medical Assocition/ National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (AMA/NACCLS) accredited school of cytolotechnology required. Documentation of successful completion of CMS approved Pap Proficiency Test within the past 12 months required. Previous cytology experience preferred. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: Certification in good standing with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or eligible (CT, ASCP) required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.) (DOT) Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors. |
