Research Technician I in Behavioral Studies

The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Ophthalmology, is seeking a full-time lab technician to support a newly funded research program that aims at restoring vision after traumatic or degenerative blinding conditions damaging the optic nerve. The position is needed to measure functional vision by behavioral tests.

BS in Biology or relevant fields, with 0 years of relevant experience required. Prior experience with animal research is preferred.


Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.


Essential Functions

The Lab Technician will be engaged in the performance of approved research projects according to defined and newly established protocols and procedures. The technician will focus on the handling of murine models (rats and mice) and will be charged with their supervision and well-being. Their work will focus on animal handling and training to perform functional assessment of their visual system prior to and following treatment. Such measures can include maze navigation and optokinetic reflex assessment. Additional duties will include the appropriate collection, recording, storage, data analysis, and reporting of results, including of electrophysiological data. Additional procedures extraction and analysis of nucleic acids (RNA, DNA) by qPCR, basic microscopy, and genotyping. Other routines include preparation of reagents, calibration of equipment for research projects, collaborative efforts with other laboratories employing molecular biology techniques and maintenance of a safe laboratory-working environment.


Physical Effort

Mobility necessary to bring the animals into the laboratory and back to the animal facility. Being able to lift heavy objects (e.g., chemical waste bins). Visual acuity sufficient for documentation
