Research Technician IV The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Ophthalmology, is seeking a full-time lab technician to support a newly funded research program that aims at restoring vision after traumatic or degenerative blinding conditions damaging the optic nerve. The position is needed to support small animal surgery, tissue procurement, histology, and immune labeling. BS in biology or related fields, with 3 years of relevant experience. Prior experience with murine research and immunohistochemistry is preferred. Job Summary Performs a variety of independent and complex laboratory work and experiments. Analyzes and interprets data, compiles results, and prepares reports. Maintains inventory, ordering, and logs. Writes manuscripts and grant proposals and prepares data visualizations. Essential Functions The Lab Technician will be engaged in the performance of approved research projects according to defined and newly established protocols and procedures. These include the appropriate collection, recording, storage, data analysis, and reporting of results. Laboratory procedures and techniques include, but are not limited to, handling and care of murine models (rats and mice), optic nerve surgery, tissue dissecting, tissue sectioning, tissue culturing, immunohistochemistry, and basic microscopy. Other routines include preparation of reagents, calibration of equipment for research projects, collaborative efforts with other laboratories employing molecular biology techniques and maintenance of a safe laboratory-working environment. Physical Effort Some physical effort is required, for example, moving and lifting boxes containing laboratory supplies and equipment (e.g. computer monitors). The Lab Technician may also be required to sit and work at a laboratory bench or cryostat to prepare cryosections for extended periods of time.
