Job Summary

Under supervision provide technical and research support related to veterinary infectious disease epidemiology, diagnosis and prevention. Provide research support for the development and application of microbial, immunological and molecular diagnostic techniques to animal diseases. Participate in ongoing research projects in the field (dairy) and within the laboratory, including generation of data.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in Animal Science or related area
  • Experience in restraint techniques for dairy cows, and collection of blood, fecal, feed and milk sampling techniques preferred.
  • Knowledge of the scientific disciplines of chemistry, microbiology, biology and molecular biology. Skills to safely work with infectious materials.
  • Skills to establish and prioritize work and schedule to meet deadlines and to accommodate changes in projects as the need arises.
  • Skills to calculate formulas, mix reagents, prepare media, and dilutions. Knowledge of basic lab skills; preparation of solutions and proficient use of standard lab equipment.
  • Skills to collect and handle samples and equipment in an aseptic manner when appropriate. Interpersonal, oral and written communication to interact with individuals from other universities, agencies, farm owners and staff, both in person and on the phone.
  • Knowledge and experience with PC computers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of lab regulation and University safety protocols including but not limited to handling treatment, disposal of hazardous waste, chemical, medical and bio-medical waste.

Work Environment

  • Work in sterile environment. This position works under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policies. Employee may at times be required to work in areas where hazardous materials are present. Work during the weekends is as needed to meet project deadlines.
