REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Staff Engineer (Signal Timing) - Traffic Engineering Division.

The Staff Engineer position provides a challenging and rewarding opportunity within the Public Works Department, Traffic Engineering Division. Some of the responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the preparation of traffic operation studies, field reviews, sight distance reviews, feasibility studies, access management studies, safety reviews and the design and preparation of signing, signalization and pavement marking plans; maintenance of traffic plan reviews. Being a strong team player and highly adaptable to new technologies are a must.
Performs a variety of engineering tasks as an intern.
Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in an engineering field related to the area of assignment.

Special Certifications and Licenses
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification may be required based on area of assignment.

Preferences
  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field
  • Professional Engineering License (P.E.)
  • Engineer-In-Training
  • Maintenance of Traffic Certification (MOT)
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE)
  • At lease one (1) year of experience with transportation software such as SYNCHRO, ArcGIS, VISSIM, Tru-Traffic.
  • At lease one (1) year of experience conducting traffic studies.
  • At lease one (1) year of experience operating or programming centralized traffic signal control systems.
  • At lease one (1) year of experience programming traffic signal controllers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Provides engineering support in the design and review of a wide variety of engineering projects.

Collects and processes engineering related data; prepares project scope of work, schedule, and design; performs geographical information system (GIS) analysis, produces maps, and maintains geodatabases.

Reviews application packages for new projects and modifications to existing sites, which include engineering construction plans, calculations, surveys, geo-technical reports, and legal documentation against County and State codes.

Prepares technical review comments and requests additional information from engineers and property owners for revisions to calculations and plans; prepares technical reports with project specific information, license conditions, engineering data, and calculation summaries.

Reviews engineering construction certifications and surveyed plans for compliance with County and State codes; performs site inspections for construction compliance and identify deficiencies in inspection reports.

Communicates with developers, attorneys, engineers, banks, and the general public for the purpose of reviewing construction plans and specifications and the issuance of permits; performs research to respond to queries and complaints.

Reviews permit applications and contractor licenses for accuracy and validity; upon determination that the information is accurate, enters into the County's database and construction permits are thereafter issued.

May review plans for compliance with County and Florida Department Of Transportation (FDOT) standards and specifications.

Performs related work as assigned.
