The Department of American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a full-time Associate Professor of Instruction to serve as Director of Urban Studies. We seek applicants with experience relevant to a variety of urban career paths including the public, private, and non-profit sectors, and the ability to teach the following courses in the undergraduate program:




  • Introduction to Urban Studies (URB 301)
  • Urban Studies Research Methods (URB 315)
  • Senior Project (URB 370)



Applicants should also discuss their ability to teach the following:




  • Race, Social Justice, and the City (URB 322R)
  • Internship and Service Learning (URB 360)
  • One additional course of the applicant's choosing



Please note this position starts in fall 2025. The position is a full time, 9-month position with a teaching load of six courses across the academic year (3-3). However, with additional administrative duties as director of Urban Studies, the teaching load will be reduced to five courses across the academic year (3-2/2-3). Teaching responsibilities include developing and revising syllabi, grading assignments and exams, maintaining grade records, consulting with students, and overseeing the learning management system (Canvas).

This is a non-tenured, short-term position, although renewal is expected, based on performance and availability of funding. As the Urban Studies director, an initial multi-year contract term of two years will be considered.

Qualifications

A PhD in a field such as urban geography, community and regional planning, urban development, urban sociology, urban anthropology or the equivalent is required, as well as teaching experience. Preferred candidates will be able to demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence, experience with instructional design, and experience working in or with public, private, and non-profit organizations.
