Job Summary

We are looking for an MRI Support Specialist to support 3T MRI research (with a particular emphasis on fMRI), at the Neuroscience Imaging Center (https://neuroscape.ucsf.edu/researchers-mri/) a core facility at UCSF's Mission Bay.

If needed, training will be provided in MRI scanning procedures and the operation of fMRI peripherals. You will be responsible for supporting and instructing research staff in using fMRI peripheral equipment, troubleshooting equipment problems, MRI data acquisition and quality assurance testing, basic computer support, documentation, data management, and maintaining supplies.

You will work closely with the center's MRI Physicist to support groups using our scanner for a wide range of neuroscience research, including studies on brain function and aging, the effects of meditation and psychedelics, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, and conditions ranging from dyslexia to schizophrenia.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in neuroscience, physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or related STEM field and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Research experience (including an understanding of research methodology)
  • Experience with basic Windows and Mac OS-X computer administration
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner, identify challenges and barriers, and recommend solutions
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Comfort with interacting with study participants and their families in a reassuring and considerate manner

Preferred Qualifications


  • MRI or fMRI experience
  • Familiarity with fmri/neuroscience stimulus software, such as e-prime, presentation, or psychopy
  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as MATLAB or python
