Essential Job Duties
The Painter role in the Trade Shops is essential for maintaining and enhancing the campus environment through skilled painting and drywall repair. This position offers the opportunity to work across various settings on campus, ensuring both safety and aesthetic quality. Key Responsibilities and duties include but not limited to:

  • Apply paint and finishes to surfaces such as walls, ceilings, casework, fixtures, handrails, bollards, and equipment.
  • Prepare areas for painting by cleaning, sanding, patching, priming, and color-matching.
  • Use tint machines to mix custom paint colors and finishes to match campus standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of work areas and vehicles, ensuring all hazardous materials are handled and disposed of correctly.
  • Review and follow plans and specifications, including product usage, required personal protective equipment (PPE), and disposal protocols.
  • Report any accidents, injuries, or safety infractions according to University guidelines.
  • Assist with campus power washing and provide support to other Trade Shops units as needed.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University, and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternative schedule.
  • May assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Communicates effectively with supervisors and the general public, understanding and following verbal and written instructions and other communications related to work assignments and other matters.
  • Skilled in the mixing of paints and in matching and blending colors.
  • Knowledge concerning the differences between coatings and their use.
  • Able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 plus pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Journeyman level commercial painting experience.

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
