Position Overview: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is seeking a Grounds Service Person for the Daytona Beach campus. The Grounds Service Person performs maintenance and repairs on the landscaped grounds, parking lots, roads, fencing, and drainage systems as assigned by the Foreman or Crew Leader.

Responsibilities include:

  • Install new and renovate old landscaping including but not limited to turf, trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds.
  • Maintain, renovate, and repair all exterior athletic and recreational facilities. Remove all trash on grounds including emptying waste receptacles. Provide emergency response, as appropriate, to exterior hazardous conditions.
  • Assist in various special events, set-ups, and building service functions as needed.
  • Maintain, renovate and repair campus grounds including but not limited to: landscaping, fencing, parking lots, roadways, and pathways. Maintain parking lots and roadways including potholes, curb stops, and cleaning. Operate power equipment using caution to ensure the safety of both life and property. Inspect equipment daily to ensure it is operating properly.
  • Maintain records of hours and materials used, and vehicle log trip tickets. Responsible for keeping all equipment safe from vandalism or theft during working hours. Responsible for requesting equipment and supplies in advance to ensure job completion. Responsible for cleaning all equipment at the end of the shift.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED with 1 year of work experience
  • Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing, with the ability to comprehend basic instructions and respond effectively
  • Must be able to operate a standard shift vehicle and possess a valid Florida's driver's license *See approved driver's details below on insurance requirements
  • Ability to operate all power equipment related to grounds maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge in all areas of ground maintenance, horticulture, cement work, etc.
  • Ability to climb ladders or scaffolding and work in overhead areas.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry miscellaneous grounds equipment or supplies short distances and to push or pull a handcart. Eye-hand coordination is essential for proper operation of power tools and other work associated with ground maintenance.
  • Employees must take necessary precautions due to the nature of the equipment they are working with, the outside elements subjected to, to protect themselves, and those around them from the hazards associated with this type of work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior grounds and/or landscaping experience

Requirements to be able to drive a university vehicle:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license. In some instances, a valid Class C (CDL) license may be required.
  • Must meet the University's standards for approved drivers. Unacceptable driving records (as stated in the Use of Equipment and Vehicles Procedure 1.17) include the following (for three years from the date of each occurrence):
    • More than 3 moving violations and/or accidents in 3 years
    • More than 2 moving violations and/or accidents in any 1 year
    • A major conviction in the last 3 years, including (but not limited to) driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and/or homicide or assault by motor vehicle.

Compensation:

The hourly pay range for this position is $14 to $16, with a starting hourly pay expectation around $15.25. The final offer will consider the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience, along with applicable state regulations, internal equity, and business needs.
