The County of Sonoma is currently recruiting to fill multiple positions at either the Junior Engineer, Assistant Engineer, or Engineer level within Permit Sonoma and Sonoma Public Infrastructure. This recruitment is for the Assistant Engineer level. If you are also interested in applying for the Junior or Engineer level, you will need to apply to the separate, concurrent recruitments being conducted at that level.

At the County of Sonoma, Assistant Engineers work independently and elevates complicated issues to their supervisors. They perform complex calculations, site evaluations and inspections . This position will perform a wide-variety of difficult field and office professional-level engineering work in design. They ensure plans and specifications are compliant with county codes, standards, and regulations. Additionally, you may train, mentor or assist staff.

Assistant Engineers:

Permit Sonoma (PRD) is currently recruiting to fill one full time position at either the Junior, Assistant, or Engineer level. Within PRD, the Engineer will primarily focus on:

  • Assisting reviewing plans, specifications, calculations, reports, and referrals for sewer, water, encroachment, and grading construction projects
  • Interacting with the public by providing assistance regarding engineering permitting services
  • Collaborating with engineers, architects, developers, and contractors on projects and providing resolutions with permitting issues
  • Performing site evaluations and construction inspections
  • Assisting and training staff on engineering principles, construction methods, and permitting services

Sonoma Public Infrastructure (SPI) is currently recruiting to fill one full time position at either the Junior, Assistant, or Engineer level. Within SPI, the Engineer will primarily focus on:

  • Assisting with special projects, including FEMA-related infrastructure repair
  • Designing and developing multi-modal pathways for pedestrians, bikes, and community projects
  • Supporting water systems and stormwater infrastructure projects, aligning with integrated waste operations and environmental goals
  • Collaborating with project managers and external partners on diverse infrastructure projects
  • Conducting field inspections and monitoring the progress

The ideal candidate will possess one or more years of experience in engineering, have the ability to shift gears quickly, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. In addition, you will possess intellectual curiosity, an interest in research, a logical mindset, and possess many of the following:

  • Expertise in supporting infrastructure drainage and stormwater systems, sanitary sewer systems, potable water systems, roads and driveways, and water infrastructure
  • The ability to accurately perform complex calculations
  • Extensive experience with infrastructure sanitary sewer systems, portable water systems, roads, driveways, drainage systems, and post-construction BMP analysis
  • Extensive knowledge reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications
  • A comprehensive understanding and the ability to interpret codes, regulations, standards, engineering principles, and calculations methodologies
  • Experience with FEMA-related infrastructure repairs
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills
  • Superb communication, writing and public presentation skills
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and GIS for design
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are desirable, but not require
Assistant Engineer's occasionally work in the evening, on weekends and rarely on holidays. Fieldwork site evaluations and inspections will occasionally be performed outdoors, year-round, and in various weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Education: Any combination of education and/or training which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in engineering and one year of full-time, professional engineering experience at a level comparable to Junior Engineer.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Professional Certification: Possession of an Engineer-in-Training Certificate with the State of California.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of: the principles, practices and techniques of civil engineering, traffic engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering depending upon assignment; statistics and advance mathematics including algebra and analytic geometry; topographic and construction surveying, stress analysis, analytical mechanics and the strength, properties and uses of construction materials; common methods and equipment utilized in engineering construction and of inspection methods used in reviewing such work; real property descriptions; engineering design and drafting methods and equipment and computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Knowledge of: the principles, practices and techniques of training.

Ability to: prepare designs and make accurate drawings and maps; make accurate mathematical calculations and neat and accurate field notes; apply principles of logic and scientific reasoning to develop and evaluate alternative courses of action and determine appropriate solutions; read, understand and interpret complex technical and legal documents, maps, technical drawings and plans; listen attentively and participate in negotiations by providing required data and information; adjust workload changes and work under stress to meet deadlines; develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of representatives from governmental and private agencies, construction and consultant contractors, coworkers and the public; write clearly and concisely in order to prepare technical reports, correspondence, and maintain records.
