Position Summary

As a Versiti Medical Science Institute physician, provides transfusion medicine (TM) medical leadership at Versiti Ohio and its associated hospitals, donors, and community. Supports the success, growth and expansion of Versiti operations in Ohio. Serves as CLIA medical director of the Versiti Ohio Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) and Specialized Production Laboratory. Key components of this position include medical oversight of blood services, laboratory practice and expert consultative services for Versiti affiliated hospitals. Provides expertise to translate complex issues and drive best practices in blood management at Versiti Ohio partner hospitals and across the Versiti footprint. Serves as the physician face of Versiti, particularly Versiti Ohio. Collaborates with other Versiti physicians to optimize medically directed policies and procedures while fostering continuous improvement and innovation. Opportunities in educational initiatives and clinical/applied research are available within Versiti blood centers and their affiliated health systems.



Responsibilities

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Provides medical consultation and technical direction to support Versiti blood operations in Ohio and across the Versiti footprint in all aspects of blood collection, processing, and distribution.
* Determines blood donor eligibility and provides medical consultation for management of donor reactions/adverse events. Reviews and directs investigation and final disposition of recipient adverse event reports.
* Performs or oversees management of donor positive infectious disease tests and abnormal results. Ensures appropriate confirmatory testing and appropriate donor notification and counseling occur. Ensures appropriate recall/lookback of products is performed and consults as needed with customer transfusion service and clinicians. Ensures reporting as applicable/required to appropriate public health agency. Oversees/approves donor reentry.
* Provides medical support to Special Patient Services for provision of autologous, directed, HLA/HPA-matched products. Reviews and approves requests for therapeutic phlebotomy.
* In partnership with Versiti Quality professionals, ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and accreditation agencies, for blood center and laboratory operations Provides medical evaluation of deviations or errors to determine impact to safety, quality, identity, purity, and potency. Supports determination of appropriate disposition and corrective actions.
* Develops and supports the implementation of medically sound policies, processes, and procedures in collaboration with Versiti physician colleagues.
* Provides consultation with Ohio/Versiti affiliated hospitals regarding TM clinical practice, laboratory cases and blood management. Directs and/or leads blood utilization and blood management projects at Ohio/Versiti and partner hospitals. Serves as a source of up-to-date information, translates complex information for partner hospitals and encourages adoption of best practices.
* Partners with Business Development, Recruitment and Public Relations to support growth and expansion of Versiti Ohio.

* Supports the development and implementation of innovative new blood products or processes.
* CLIA Medical Director of OH Immunohematology Reference Laboratory and Specialized Production (QC) laboratories. Provides compliant oversight of high and medium complexity laboratory staff technical duties. Performs review and approval of immunohematology case reports. Partners with local and Versiti-wide laboratory management to support education and skill advancement.
* Consults with regional and out-of-region physicians regarding issues of laboratory testing, laboratory medicine, and transfusion medicine.
* Demonstrates thought leadership through at least one of the following: clinical and/or applied research (at Versiti or a partnering institution), publication in peer-reviewed journals, and/or participates in committees or working groups of relevant professional organizations at the local, national, or international level.

* Fosters education of associates, as well as medical and lay persons through participation in Versiti educational offerings and activities.
* Maintains a high level of professional expertise in transfusion medicine, laboratory medicine, hematology, and other areas of medical expertise with demonstration of ongoing continued medical education in the field.
* Maintains a high level of community involvement and Public Relations outreach efforts. With the OHIO Area Vice President drives expansion of donor and customer base.

* Participates with other Versiti physicians to provide 24/7 Medical Call for blood operations and associated laboratories.
* Participates in continuous improvement and strategic planning.
* Demonstrates Versiti core values.

GENERAL DUTIES
* Maintains medical records and related documentation in accordance with legal and organizational requirements.
* Adheres to Versiti, Ohio, Biosafety, NRC, and OSHA procedures and regulations.
* Participates in academic programs at academic institutions as requested.
* Upholds the customer service standards, confidentiality, and management philosophy of Versiti.



Qualifications

Education

* M.D. or D.O. Degree
* Board certified in pathology (AP/CP or CP only), internal medicine, or pediatrics (with subspecialty boards in hematology)
* Board certified/board eligible in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine (American Board of Pathology-ABP)
* Current or eligible for medical licenses in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

Experience/Certifications:

* Demonstrated 3-5 or more years' experience in both 1) pathology/laboratory medicine or hematology and 2) transfusion medicine.
* Demonstrated leadership and team building abilities.
* Knowledge and a commitment to excellence in the practice of transfusion medicine.
* Demonstrated potential for serving as an active collaborator who has the desire and growing skill set to guide or be a resource to customer hospitals with patient blood management programs initiatives.
* Demonstrated innovative and progressive approach to continuous improvement in areas of responsibility.

Skills and Knowledge

* Knowledge of clinical and laboratory medicine
* Ability to read and interpret SOPs, state, federal, and national regulations, and standards as they apply to transfusion medicine (i.e. FDA-Food and Drug Administration, AABB-American Association of Blood Banks, CAP-College of American Pathologists).
* Able to direct/provide oversight of a clinical laboratory.
* Expertise in directing procedures in apheresis and cellular therapy.
* Strong interpersonal skills and able to work within a team.
* Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
* Able to collaborate with other Veristi TM colleagues for standardization of applicable policies, processes, and procedures throughout the system.
* Strong computer literacy with ability to easily interact within system based electronic medical records.
* Self-driven and accountable.
* Excellent consultative and consensus building skills.
* Good communication skills, ability to use and to be understood in English.
* Ability to write lectures and articles using original or innovative techniques or styles; excellent presentation skills with capacity to present to varied audiences.
* Ability to apply judgment to detailed but very structured written or oral instructions, ability to deal with problems involving concrete variable in standardized work procedures.
