Work Schedule and Hours
This is a 20 hour per week/12 month per year position. Typical university hours are Monday-Friday. In this position hours are flexible, and based on class/program schedule, work will include some evenings and weekends based on classes and program oversight.

Position Summary
The Great Smokies Writing Program ( GSWP) offers opportunities for writers of all levels to join a supportive learning community in which their skills and talents can be explored, practiced, and forged under the careful eye of professional writers. Classes within the GSWP include poetic form, worldbuilding in fiction, writing braided personal essays and more. The program is committed to providing the community with university-level classes led by published writers and experienced teachers.
The Director of the Great Smokies Writing Program will be a well-published author with the ability to manage a growing program with the goal of strengthening UNCA's reputation as a center for the literary arts. The Director will manage both the day-to-day operation of the program as well as the broader responsibilities of fundraising, recruiting and retaining faculty and students, and advancing the reputation of the university in the larger literary community of western North Carolina and beyond.
FLSA Exempt
Required Education/Experience/Skills

  • Master's degree in Fine Arts (MFA) or equivalent
  • Portfolio of traditionally published work
  • Experience with program management

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills


  • MFA or equivalent
  • Robust portfolio of traditionally published work
  • Candidates with connections to regional networks with a strong reputation within the writing community, national outreach would be a plus.
  • Prior experience managing a complex program, with the ability to develop new ideas, foster learning opportunities, and build community connections.
  • Teaching experience
  • Fundraising experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced and diverse experience in writing and publishing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Ability to clearly articulate writing principles and techniques for effective storytelling
  • Ability to build strong connections and community outreach
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices
