Job Summary:

The Department of Consumer Science is hiring lecturer positions to teach one or more courses in the Personal Finance major during the Spring 2025 semester. The Personal Finance program leverages economics, social sciences, and financial analysis from a people-centered perspective, developing financial experts who can help individuals and families live more financially secure lives. The courses may include, but are not limited, to the following.

CNSR SCI 635: ESTATE PLANNING FOR FINANCIAL PLANNERS
Analysis from a financial planner's perspective of the process of planning the accumulation, conservation, and distribution of an estate, in the manner that most effectively and efficiently accomplishes an individual's personal tax and non-tax objectives.

CNSR SCI 665: HOUSEHOLD RISK MANAGEMENT
The course covers the application of advanced analytical techniques to examine household financial risk. Implications for financial planning of changes in family structure and earnings. Private and social insurance that guard against economic consequences of death, disability, ill health, retirement, marital dissolution. Use of financial planning software.

It is expected that the lecturer(s) will teach these courses in an in-person format during the Spring 2025 semester with the potential to continue teaching related courses in the Department of Consumer Science in the future.


Responsibilities:
Facilitates classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction and assists with instructional development and design for a single course or series of courses within an academic discipline to support the delivery of quality instruction. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.

  • 80% Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction for one or more courses, including assessment of student performance
  • 5% Develops instructional design and curriculum relevant to a course of instruction
  • 15% Serves as an initial point of contact for students as it relates to specific course or series content and expectations

Master's Degree
A minimum of a Masters degree in Consumer Science, Business Administration or closely related field is required.


Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have the following skills and abilities:
- Ability to work effectively within a diverse community
- Demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
- Industry experience and knowledge of the subject matter

Preferred Qualifications:
- At least two years of successful teaching experience at the college level
- Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation


Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 33.3% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.


Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 5 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

CONSUMER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Consumer Science develops students able to apply social science theories to understanding household and consumer interactions within the marketplace and the public sector. Students undertake research on consumer decision-making affecting the social and economic well-being of individuals and families. This is a multi-disciplinary degree program. Activities of the department are designed to foster development of a fair marketplace that enhances the interests and well-being of consumers, families and communities. The Department is home to a Ph.D. program in Consumer Behavior & Family Economics and undergraduate majors in Consumer Behavior and Marketplace Studies and Personal Finance. It is also the administrative home for two campus-wide centers: the Kohl's Center for Retailing Excellence and Center for Financial Security.

KOHL'S CENTER FOR RETAILING (KCR): Founded by a general endowment from Kohl's Department Store, the KCR's mission is to create awareness and excitement about the retailing industry at UW-Madison. KCR provides financial support for student recruitment, internships, industry visitors and speakers and career fairs in fostering development of student careers in retail and related fields.
