As a pivotal member of the Orthopedics Leadership Team, the Vice President of Research & Development for the Orthopedics business reports directly to the Vice President & General Manager of Orthopedics. This leader will oversee 7+ direct reports and a full R&D organization of 70+ professionals, driving the strategic direction of the business and supporting CONMED's growth. Responsibilities: *Product Development Planning and Execution: Including product and technology roadmaps, budgeting, resource planning, process development, technology transfer, vendor partnerships, metrics, and successful execution of these roadmaps, projects, and budgets. *Customer Experience: Engage with surgeons to understand their needs and incorporate their feedback into product development through interactions at labs, industry events, and in the field. *Team Development: Develop high-potential individual contributors, managers, and directors as part of our talent-focused strategy, with the goal of promoting from within. Recruits, develops, and retains exceptional talent in pursuit of delivering exceptional results. *Performance Management: Drive performance management of the existing team, invest in top performers, and actively work to improve or replace lower performers. Comfortable and proactive with constructive and positive feedback as a critical component of effective performance management. *Strategic Partnership: Act as a strategic partner and advisor to the Vice President and General Manager, and to each functional leader on the Orthopedic Leadership Team. * Process Improvement: Evolve processes to drive efficiency and effectiveness while reducing bureaucracy and redundancy. * Culture Building: Build and strengthen the culture within the R&D organization, aligning it with the Orthopedics division culture and tone set by the VP & GM of Orthopedics. * Collaboration: Collaborate with centralized engineering functions, operations, and other departments to ensure high alignment and clear priorities. Import, export, and develop talent in a collaborative effort to improve performance across all departments and functions. * NPD Projects: Deliver new product development (NPD) projects on time and on budget, ensuring designs meet the intended purpose and delight surgeon customers. *Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership on complex design issues, ensuring design, verification, and validation of each product and its components are appropriate for approval and manufacturing. *Innovation Strategy: Develop and drive the innovation strategy in partnership with cross-functional executive leaders, including technology roadmaps to address current and anticipated customer needs. Qualifications *Bachelor's in engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred. *15+ years of direct experience in R&D, preferably in medical devices, with hands-on experience in multiple disciplines. *8+ years of employee management experience, with at least 3 years managing large teams and 5+ years managing those who also manage others. *Experience within a highly regulated industry is required. Preferred Qualifications: *Experience with M&A and related integration activities preferred. *Experience leading development of disposable/consumable devices and complex capital equipment preferred. *Proven track record of implementing change, driving cost improvements, and increasing efficiencies. *Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively network and interface with all levels of the organization. *Committed to traveling 30-50% based on needs of the business, including, but not limited to being onsite with teams at CONMED offices, and attending labs, industry events, and Voice of Customer activities in the field.
