Description:

The Inpatient Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides comprehensive health care for assigned patients/community as determined by the scope of practice guidelines in the gynecologic oncology specialty. This includes completion of a health assessment, determining diagnosis, planning and prescribing treatment within the parameters of medical staff privileges at UI Health and area of expertise. The Gyn Onc Inpatient APRN participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other health care disciplines.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Independently perform a full range of tasks and assist faculty with the inpatient management of Gynecologic Oncology Service in collaboration with residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The service includes tasks related to post-operative patients, medical admissions for complications of gynecologic malignancies or their treatments, patients receiving cancer treatment and requiring hospital admission, and palliative/end-of-life care.
  • Document complex history, physical exam, and evaluation in the Epic EMR system.
  • Provide patient education, develop plans of care, order medications, and other diagnostic/laboratory tests.
  • Maintain professional communication between consultants and ancillary services and coordinate multidisciplinary discharge planning.
  • Manage admissions for inpatient chemotherapy and/or de-sensitizations under the supervision of a collaborating gynecologic oncologist.
  • Serve as a liaison with the ambulatory Gyn Onc team to provide continuity of care, assist with admissions from the Outpatient Care Clinic (OCC), ensure successful hospital discharges, and provide support for perioperative patients and post-hospital discharge patients.
  • Perform procedures commensurate with training, experience, and hospital privileges. Potential examples include but are not limited to, accessing port-a-caths, obtaining central IV access, paracenteses, thoracenteses, and surgical wound care.
  • Respond to all Rapid Response calls and Code One emergencies called on inpatient Gyn Onc services Monday through Friday during their shift.
  • Assist with patient care and be the first call for the service while the resident physicians are in the operating room or attend their protected time for didactics.
    Participate in clinical research and teaching of medical students and residents.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor board and pre-operative conferences.
  • Maintain at least 12 hours of oncology-specific CEUs each calendar year.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required.
  • Graduation from accredited APRN program.
  • Current National Certification as Acurte Care Nurse Practitiones (ACNP-BC)/Adult Gerentology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certification (AGACNP-BC) by the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice.
  • Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois required.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Pursuit of oncology certification is required with the goal of passing the certification exam within two years of employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Clinical experience in an oncology medicine, gynecology, or surgical care setting
  • Experience working in an academic medical center
  • Effective collaboration skills that facilitate therapeutic relationships between physicians, APRN providers, other colleagues and hospital leadership, and the multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, interpersonal communication, education, and clinical experience
    Bilingual
