Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Specialized Education Services ( SES) Department offers programs in Special Education, Birth through Kindergarten (BK), and Interpreting, Deaf Education, and Advocacy Services ( IDEAS). It includes full-time faculty who have a history of success procuring external funding for both research and development of service providers, teachers, researchers, and leaders. The Special Education program area offers CAEP-accredited initial teacher licensure programs in the following areas:

  • BS in Special Education: General Curriculum
  • BS in Elementary Education and Special Education (Dual Certification)
  • Post-Baccalaureate Alternative Initial Licensure (PAIL) program in Special Education: General Curriculum (Graduate program)
  • M.A.T. in Special Education


The Special Education program also offers the following graduate programs:

  • Post Master's Certificate in Instructional Coaching
  • Ph.D. in Special Education

The Department also offers bachelor's degree programs in ASL Interpreter Preparation, Deaf Education, and Deaf Advocacy. In addition, the BK program offers a master's degree in Birth-Kindergarten and a post-baccalaureate initial licensure program- BKIL.
Position Summary
The candidate in this position offers needed instructional support to the Special Education programs in the SES Department. Instructional support includes teaching four courses for each of the Fall and Spring semesters (face-to-face and online) and possibly supervising students in clinical placements. The clinical assistant professor will also help maintain the integrity of the programs through offering a high degree of expertise in service delivery and instruction for students with high-incidence disabilities, with capacity to serve on dissertation committees, to assume departmental administrative roles such as program coordinator, and service to the department, the School of Education, the University, and the field.
Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in Special Education or current enrollment in a doctoral program in Special Education with completion of all program requirements except the dissertation (i.e., ABD). Candidates who have not yet received a doctoral degree, but anticipate receiving the degree, will be considered for this position.
  • Documented evidence of exemplary teaching experience in higher education.
  • At least three years of experience teaching students with disabilities in K-12 settings.
  • Expertise and successful experience in high-incidence disabilities.
  • Evidence of service to schools, a university, and/or professional organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with credentialing and licensure programs.
  • Experience with program development for pre-service and in-service teachers.
  • Experience with synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid course development and delivery.
  • Engagement in scholarly work with evidence of conference presentations, grant activities, or publications.
  • Knowledge and experience with edTPA requirements.
