Job Summary

The Inpatient Facility Coding Manager 2 manages the Inpatient Coding Unit. The program and the position supports the clinical enterprise, and clinicians/doctors which include the following pivotal functions.

This position is responsible for the operational function and strategic planning for the HIM Inpatient, Coding Unit.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the Coding Programs that have critical impact upon the organization
  • Serves in a leadership role for numerous HIM Committees such as CDI Steering Committee, MQii Committee, DQR Committee, Coding Workgroup and Compliance Committees
  • Operational Duties and Project Management
  • Education and Development

Minimum Qualifications: For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload their license, certification, and educational degree/diploma if required for the position

  • (RHIA) Registered Health Information Administrator OR (RHIT) Registered Health Information Technician OR Health Information Professional with sufficient background, clinical knowledge and understanding of Coding in all areas, both Professional and Technical
  • Must have at least one of the following credentials Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) OR Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P) OR Clinical Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) OR (AHIMA) Approved ICD-10 CM & PCS Trainer OR Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS)
  • Demonstrated experience in developing Coding programs
  • Demonstrated experience directing, oversight, and strategic planning for current and expanding coding & documentation programs
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of all medical/surgical specialties, as well as documentation and compliance guidelines
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Clinical Documentation requirements and the impact it has on hospital reporting metrics
  • Ability to manage a large and complex coding operation, including training, data management and monitoring
  • Ability to analyze and interpret standards including CMS, OHS, Title 22, UCDHS policies and procedures to assure coding/charging is in compliance
  • Knowledge of business, management principles and budget control
  • Ability to interpret statistical data and compile reports for management
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to express ideas assertively, clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Ability to build strong working relationships across all levels of management, staff, faculty and outside entities
  • Strong leadership and management skills to provide planning, coordination and direction to departmental staff
  • Ability to develop and implement new proposals and programs
  • Ability to streamline processes in order to more effectively and efficiently oversee coding and charging activities in the Health System
  • Ability to be highly organized and delegate assignments to staff effectively
  • Knowledge of priority setting strategies, strong problem-solving abilities and an adeptness at initiating actions for effective conflict resolution
  • Ability to exercise exemplary tact and diplomacy when dealing with high level internal and external executives, faculty and outside entities
  • Proven ability to transition between projects and multi-task while managing multiple short term and long-range projects
  • Excellent presentation skills and prior experience in creating and presenting complex information to diverse audiences including clinicians, executives and executive staff
  • Must be able to manage both confidential and routine matters with discretion
  • Knowledge of AHRQ, PSI 90 Composite and HAC Reduction Program
  • Must be knowledgeable of Institutional goals, principles, and practices of management
  • Must be able to function effectively and collaboratively within the dynamics of a complex academic medical center
  • Thorough knowledge of healthcare information technology, medical terminology, and of all relevant clinical information systems, with a strong understanding of the application of computational tools to enhance and improve clinical practice
  • Excellent communications skills to convey complex information clearly and concisely to all levels of staff and management, with the ability to motivate, influence, and persuade others, and cultivate a strong commitment to efficiency, functionality, and quality customer service
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.

  • 5-7 years of demonstrated experience in coding leadership

Department Overview

The Health Information Management (HIM) Department is a critical part of the healthcare organization, dedicated to improving patient care, supporting research, and facilitating education through the efficient management of medical records and clinical databases. The department, which consists of over 200 Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) across diverse units, is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, accessibility, and compliance of patient information, which is crucial for clinical decision-making, billing accuracy, and regulatory adherence.

The department includes key groups such as Inpatient and Outpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity (IP/OP CDI), All Coding Operations, the CDI Coding Quality Analyst Group, the HIM Clinical Analyst Team, and the Provider Advocate Team. Each of these teams plays a specialized role in supporting the organization's health information needs.

IP/OP CDI focuses on ensuring that clinical documentation accurately reflects the complexity and severity of patient care, contributing to appropriate coding, billing, and reimbursement. All of Coding Operations ensures that all patient records are coded accurately according to industry standards and regulatory requirements, supporting billing processes and ensuring compliance. The CDI Coding Quality Analyst Group is responsible for monitoring and improving the quality of clinical documentation and coding processes to ensure accuracy and efficiency. The HIM Clinical Analyst Team focuses on the analysis and optimization of clinical data systems, ensuring that health information is easily accessible and accurate across the organization in collaboration with other department data analysts. The Provider Advocate Team collaborates directly with physicians and other clinical staff to ensure accurate documentation and smooth integration of clinical data into patient records.

Together, these teams ensure that the department not only supports day-to-day clinical operations but also plays a key role in broader strategic initiatives. The HIM Department ensures that data integrity is maintained, healthcare regulations are followed, and operational workflows are optimized to support patient care and organizational efficiency. Through this multidisciplinary approach, the HIM Department significantly contributes to the organization's mission of delivering high-quality healthcare.
