The Opportunity:

This position will be responsible for maintaining a safe environment on the university campuses through the enforcement of state statutes, local ordinances, and university regulations. They will strive to maintain a positive rapport with the community in the performance of their duties. They must maintain a professional demeanor at all times. This position will perform a wide variety of duties involving the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes, controlling traffic flow and enforcing state and local traffic regulations, issuing citations, participating in and conducting a variety of criminal investigations, and making arrests under general supervision. They will provide support and assistance for special events, community partnerships, and law enforcement programs. Documentation of situations when appropriate, and performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of law enforcement. All sworn personnel are considered to be in critical positions.

Responsibilities:


  • Conducts proactive preventative patrols to include foot patrols in appropriate areas to assure the safety of the university community.

  • Required to take appropriate police action when confronted with violators of the law or potentially hazardous situations.

  • Investigate criminal incidents and prepare reports. Prepares, submits, and assists in processing university referrals for discipline. Maintains an acceptable level of proficiency in investigation, report writing, and all aspects of their duties.

  • Safeguards pedestrian traffic on campus through selective traffic enforcement, including but not limited to the issuance of traffic citations, and written or verbal warnings. Maintains the smooth flow of traffic on campus by monitoring campus road networks and recognizing engineering deficiencies and traffic hazards. Relieves congested intersections through the use of traffic control. Assists in parking control through the issuance of parking citations.

  • Assists other Law Enforcement Agencies or the public by providing information, first aid, vehicle assistance, and all other appropriate requests for assistance. Supports community partnerships and assists in community events and law enforcement programs.

  • Provides crowd control at special events and monitors and responds to all alarms on campus.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervision include but are not limited to, directed patrol, attendance at authorized training, court appearances, periodic area checks of residence halls and specific alarmed areas, escort services for personnel or monies when requested, securing university facilities at designated times, allowing building access to authorized individuals, and providing emergency access and assistance when requested. Documentation of any and all situations as appropriate.


Minimum Qualifications:

Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943, Florida Statutes. All applicants must successfully complete the Basic Recruit Training Program at a CJSTC (Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission) certified training school and pass the Florida certification exam.If a certified Law Enforcement Officer from another state, the applicant must have completed FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement) equivalency training and pass Florida State certification exam. Appropriate college coursework or vocational training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.Must be at least 19 years of age and a U.S. citizen, must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and may not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Must pass a rigorous background investigation, to include psychological, physical, drug testing, and Computer Voice Stress Analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • 2 years of law enforcement related experience in the field utilizing public relations, comprehension, accuracy, and confidentiality relative to police work.

  • Demonstrated level of professional customer service and interpersonal communication skills, written & verbal.

  • Ability to function with minimum direct supervision with individuals from varied backgrounds and experiences.

  • A comprehensive working knowledge of the criminal justice system/processes, and Florida State Statutes.

  • Ability to work efficiently in a stressful environment.
