Description of the Department or Unit |
The Department of Communication at Appalachian State University focuses on preparing students to succeed in the varied fields within the communication industry. The department offers five majors - advertising, communication studies, digital journalism, electronic media/broadcasting, and public relations - and a minor in communication. Graduates work in a wide range of positions in media, corporate, agency, government, and nonprofit organizations.
The department is responsible for the management of five award-winning student-run media outlets:
The Appalachian news organization; AppTV, the department's HD TV channel; 90.5
WASU-FM The App, an
FCC-licensed terrestrial college radio station; Second Story Media, a communication agency working with local nonprofits and other organizations to develop communication campaigns; and
The Peel Literature and Arts Review literary magazine, providing a print and digital showcase for student art and stories.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
Responsibilities may include teaching courses at App State's Hickory campus. Other
responsibilities include teaching departmental courses, advising students, maintaining a
program of scholarly and/or creative activity, and participating in departmental, university and
professional service. |

ABD with reduction in rank and salary:
ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since
ABD will not meet the minimum requirements,
ABD will not be considered. |
