Pharmacy Technician III-Administrative Assistant

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Department of Pharmacy has the responsibility for the implementation and coordination of drug control in the process of providing pharmaceutical care for patients of all ages within the Medical Center. Under the clinical supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician III assists pharmacists in pharmaceutical preparation, distribution, and record keeping functions in the delivery of pharmaceutical supplies to patients in accordance to department policies and guidelines.

The Pharmacy Technician III performs specialized billing, quality reporting/data analysis, prior authorization support, controlled substances, inventory purchasing, medication reconciliation/clinical support, sterile products, hazardous medication preparation, or Tech Check Tech functions contributing to essential departmental workflow and process efficiency. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

*Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

*Performs standard Pharmacy Technician I and II job functions related to Unit Dose medications, automated dispensing, medication drawers and medication exchanges and deliveries.

*Utilizes complex mathematical skills in computing the preparation and distribution of pharmaceuticals (ratios, dilutions, conversions), creating statistical reports and/or tally logs and proposing cost saving options and alternatives.

*Interacts and communicates with providers, management, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate departmental operations.

*Operates pharmacy computer system to fill medication replacement orders and missing medication requests; accurately credits patient medication in pharmacy computer system as appropriate.Prepares specialized quality functions to assist Pharmacy Leadership.

*Adheres to safety and security procedures to promote a safe and secure environment including adherence to state restrictions on Pharmacy Technician functions, as well as informing appropriate personnel of any detected safety hazards.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

In addition to the principal job functions contained on the primary job descriptions, the following duties are also required in the department noted above.

1. Performs administrative functions including coordinating staff work schedules with Pharmacy Leadership, verifies time and attendance, logs and tracks leave (FMLU, low volume, requests for leave).

2. *Inventories, orders and coordinates office supply purchases and deliveries.

3. *Prepares/types meeting minutes, procedures, forms and reports; may type highly sensitive materials requiring a significant degree of confidentiality.

4. Supports and is involved in the organization's Quality Improvement initiatives (LEAN) as requested by Pharmacy Leadership.

5. *Supports development and implementation of spreadsheets, databases and systems for quality improvement functions related to medication management services.

6. *Supports Pharmacy Leadership in departmental quality assurance monitoring and regulatory requirements (Joint Commission, USP, Nebraska Department of Health Services, Board of Pharmacy).

7. Designs reports and graphs accurately to efficiently represent processes and outcomes and ensure data integrity.

8. *Coordinates and maintains departmental files/ records, tracks competencies and/or educational documentation including licensure/registration with the State of Nebraska, compliance measures, inspections, audits and financial invoices.

9. *Acts a liaison between pharmacy and external data customers; contacts appropriate individuals with departmental questions/issues related to project work.

10. *Actively and collaboratively works with nurses and nurse managers to correct discrepancies on Controlled Substance Administration Sheets or in the automated dispensing cabinets.

11. *Responsible for conducting controlled substance audits as defined by the Medication Diversion Prevention Team.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalency required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Minimum of one (1) year experience in an institutional pharmacy environment (hospital or health care facility with admitted patients) or a retail pharmacy environment required.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Nebraska required. Pharmacy Technician Certification from a State of Nebraska approved certification agency required. Examples include: ptcb, ExCPT, UNMC (NE-CPhT).
