Job Summary

Performs maintenance, modification and repairs of locking mechanisms throughout FIU Campuses.

  • Install various access control devices. Program IP Access Control Panels & Systems with low voltage cabling termination and connections. Customize cabling to meet operational requirements and life safety code. Customize cabling to meet operational requirements and life safety code. Analyze, troubleshoot and diagnose system failures or malfunctions.
  • Performs a variety of skilled locksmith duties such as on-site repairs of broken locks, doors and related hardware. Uses a mobile/tool/parts cart on campus. Replaces worn-out or broken parts locks. Completes inspection of attached hardware as a preventive measure to eliminate future breakdowns. Performs emergency maintenance as required. Will install with or without direct supervision: Access Control devices such as; Card Readers, Request to Exit Buttons (REX), Motion Sensors, Maglocks, Electric Door Strikes, Access Control Panels Installations and programming, Power Supplies, various electronic components, and various cable that includes but is not limited to: twisted pair cable, stranded cable and solid conductor low voltage cable. Cable installation includes: placements, termination, testing, labeling and documentation. Maintain mechanical locks, master keying scheme, and complete related Locksmith traditional duties.
  • Cuts keys on key cutting machine from original or from manufacturers code when original is not available. Completes installation or removal of lock cylinders from mortise, knob lock and padlock for repairs or modifications.
  • Using lock cylinders placing springs and pins in an organized manner in mortise, padlocks, and knob locks as required to recombinants. Under supervisor's guidance recombinants.
  • Checks on reports of malfunctioning or broken locks, door closers, etc., and diagnoses the problem. Determines what parts and equipment will be necessary to do the job. Estimates repair time in view of security requirements.
  • Receives in-service training of unlocking complex doors without the use of keys, e.g., picking locks, removing hinges, etc., as needed. Assists in obtaining data from department administrators and/or immediate supervisor for the coordination of new keying systems and for new construction or major renovations.
  • Performs general emergency maintenance duties connected to any and all aspects of related work such as required by the Facilities Management/Facilities Operations supervision. This may include such items as hurricane protection, barricading of ditches, roads, emergency lights, broken road signs, repairing leaks on a permanent or temporary basis and other duties as required. On occasion may be requested to assist with carpentry and masonry repairs.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience as locksmith or closely related experience. Completion of a certified locksmith trade school training may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
  • Must be able to eligible to register as licensed locksmith with Miami Dade County and obtain license within 3 months of hire.
