Director of User Experience (UX) Design

HealthPartners is currently hiring for a Director, User Experience Design. The Director of User Experience (UX) Design plays a critical role in setting and driving our vision for the HealthPartners User Experience strategy and practice across the organization. The UX Design Director leads a team made up of four disciplines, UX, Design, Research and Accessibility. The UX team champions our users, taking complex health & well-being, including healthcare and insurance, interactions and providing solutions that differentiate HealthPartners. The Director ensures the consistent, efficient, and effective delivery of experiences that delight our users, making every experience simple, accessible, guiding, and empowering throughout the end-user journey.

The Director must be an involved leader, who can build trust and influence a wide variety of stakeholder groups. Critical to this role's success will be this leader's ability to build relationships across all levels of individual contributors and leadership. This position will lead a team of six (6) direct reports with total accountability of over twenty (20) personnel.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree with a concentration in UX Design, Information Architecture, Web Design, Interactive Design, Brand, Business Administration, or equivalent
  • 10 years of experience in leadership/management of Human Centered Design, interaction design, user interface design, user research and accessibility
  • 7 years of experience leading within a highly matrixed organization, preferably leading UX Design professionals
  • Demonstrated experience with UX research, design, and accessibility tools.
  • Excellent leadership and people skills, with an ability to drive change and influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking and communication, project management abilities.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience working in Health care or Health Insurance
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • Proficiency in healthcare technology platforms, telehealth, mobile health apps, and data analytics


Hours/Location:



  • M-F; Days
  • May work in a hybrid capacity but will need to minimally be onsite two days/week (Tuesday/Wednesday).


Responsibilities:



  • (10%) - UX Strategy and Practice Development: Define, drive, and guide the UX strategy and practice with a focus on care, plan and existing and potential patients, members, and colleagues. The UX team will consistently apply a variety of factors, including an understanding of current business trends, mature practices for User Research, User Experience Design, User Interaction Design and Accessibility for digital and non-digital products and experiences. The ultimate objective is to deliver a simple, guiding, and expert experience every single time across every user journey.


  • (10%) - UX Team Leadership: Lead and mentor the UX team to deliver high quality solutions, influence leadership, product owners, and business partners on UX best practices and execution. Lead a team to design and develop experiences that create value for our users, business, and brand across digital, and non-digital channels and products. Responsible for supervision of staff, including having the authority to hire, transfer, lay off, promote, discipline and discharge, train, reward, and review performance of employees. Ensure compliance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures.


  • (10%) - Cross Functional Leadership: Collaborate and build a robust network across Communications & Marketing, Care, Plan, IT, HR, Finance, Data Ops, and other key stakeholders to ensure the alignment of UX strategy and goals across the organization. Assess core strategies to assure UX is engaged and provide the right level of consulting at the right time to deliver on a differentiated, seamless, simple, and affordable experience.


  • (10%) - User Experience Transformation: Lead initiatives that transform health & well-being, including healthcare and insurance, user experiences using data, industry best practices, and human centered design to support HealthPartners core business objectives to maintain the highest performing team, help our patients and members thrive, and enable strategic growth.


  • (10%) - Works closely with Senior Leaders: Stay abreast of health & wellbeing, including healthcare and insurance, user experience trends. Lead market research efforts and competitive analysis to assure HealthPartners is leaning into industry leading best practices. Drive innovation across the organization through strategic initiatives, partnerships, and make recommendations for UX application.


  • (10%) - User Experience Practice KPI's, Analytics and Performance: Identify, evaluate, and measure relevant KPI's to improve and validate success.


  • (10%) - Continuous Improvement: Champion and evolve critical design platforms such as the Pattern Library and our Digital Design System and ensure adherence. Assess and recommend tools that improve quality, consistency, and efficiency.


  • (10%) - Evaluate and Guide Priorities: Partner with UX and cross functional business partners to prioritize the team's work, support the team in their work, develop their skills and strengths. Focus on our values of excellence, compassion, integrity, and partnership.


  • (10%) - Mature the role of User Experience: Elevate the importance of user experience across the organization and embed it into the core of product development. Champion and strengthen foundational UX practices while also exploring and implementing new UX methodologies, tools, and technologies to enhance the team's capabilities and stay ahead of industry standards. Break down silos and foster collaboration across different channels (web, mobile, in-clinic, etc.) to create a cohesive and seamless user experience across all touchpoints. Instill a culture of user-centricity through the product lifecycle.


  • (10%) - Budget and Resource Management: Oversee department budgets, resource allocation, vendor procurement, and timelines to ensure efficient execution of UX projects on time and within scope. Negotiate agile team staffing with Product, Business Partners, and Content team.
