Position: Financial Aid Advisor

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide and Support: Assist students and parents through the financial aid application and renewal process.

  • Expert Knowledge: Maintain a comprehensive understanding of Federal and State Aid programs to accurately inform students and parents about eligibility requirements.

  • Evaluate and Advise: Review student applications to determine eligibility for various aid programs while maintaining confidentiality.

  • Program Management: Oversee and manage designated Federal or State financial aid programs under the supervision of the Director of Financial Aid.

  • Community Engagement: Facilitate Financial Aid Information sessions at local high schools and public venues.

  • Student Success: Maintain a thorough understanding of Student Success Division services to effectively assist students.

  • Additional Duties: Complete all other responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Advise students on obtaining and retaining financial aid eligibility.

Job Description:

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The primary duty of the Financial Aid Advisor is the advisement of students relative to financial aid planning and preparation.

  • Assist students (and parents) with the financial aid application during the initial and renewal reapplication process.

  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of Federal and State Aid to accurately convey to students (and parents) eligibility requirements for the different financial aid programs.

  • Reviews, and evaluates student applications to determine eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid.

  • Maintains confidentiality of certain College information as required including student records.

  • Provide sound judgement when considering extenuating circumstances.

  • Oversee and manage one or more designated Federal or State financial aid program(s) under the supervision of the Director of Financial Aid.

  • Facilitates Financial Aid Information sessions at local high schools and other public venues.

  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the services provided by the Student Success Division to effectively assist students.

  • Completes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The essential job functions and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Advising students to obtain and retain financial aid eligibility for all types of aid.

  • Maintaining a general knowledge of Student Success Division services in support of servicing students.

  • Advising students relative to the Financial Aid application process.

  • Reviewing and evaluating student applications to determine eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid.

  • Using professional judgment relative to student requests and appeals.

  • Supporting the Financial Aid Office in planning, organizing, and carrying out specific financial aid functions including but not limited to coordination of State grant and scholarships, monitoring institutional, Foundation and community scholarships, and preparing student loans.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and at least two (2) years of relevant experience in a post-secondary educational environment.

  • Familiarity federal and state financial aid programs and services.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Capable of effectively working with a diverse student population.

  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion while interacting with students and the general public.

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office and Windows based computer applications.

  • Detailed oriented and ability to maintain strict accuracy.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate self-motivation.

  • In lieu of post-secondary work-experience, documented work experience in an area of customer service and support role that aligns with the required knowledge and skills may be considered.

  • Hours for this position are Monday through Thursday 9:30 AM - 6:30 PM and Fridays 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

  • Summer hours may vary.

  • Some evenings and weekends may be required as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
