Position Summary

The Accelerating Resilience Innovations in Drylands (ARID) Institute is actively hiring for a Science Coordinator to support the Middle Rio Grande Endangered Species Collaborative Program (MRGESCP). The MRGESCP is a multi-party collaborative comprised of federal, state, local government agencies; Pueblos; municipal water utilities; an irrigation district; and environmental non-governmental organizations. UNM-ARID provides programmatic, administrative, and scientific support to the MRGESCP in order to fulfill its role of being a collaborative space for the signatory partners to collaborate and coordinate scientific and management activities related to the listed species of the Middle Rio Grande (MRG) and their habitat, the riparian bosque ecosystem.

The MRGESCP Science Coordinator will support the Science Lead in implementing MRGESCP science activities and initiatives as recommended by the MRGESCP governing body, the Executive Committee (EC).

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists with scheduling, coordinating, and hosting seminars, meetings, workshops, and other MRGESCP-sponsored events.
  2. Supports the Science Lead in planning and implementing MRGESCP-sponsored science meetings and events, including quarterly Science and Adaptive Management Committee meetings.
  3. Coordinates distribution of meeting materials; takes minutes during MRGESCP science meetings.
  4. Facilitates and coordinates Science & Technical Ad Hoc Groups.
  5. Plans and coordinates MRGESCP field trips and site visits.
  6. Plans and coordinates the biennial Science Symposium.
  7. Coordinates activities of support staff, consultants, faculty, and/or volunteers engaged in implementation and administration of MRGESCP science activities and events.
  8. Assists in the development of newsletters, brochures, annual reports, and other MRGESCP educational and outreach materials.
  9. Researches and synthesizes information; prepares briefings for other PST staff or MRGESCP participants.
  10. Represents the MRGESCP and UNM-ARID at public outreach events and external meetings.
  11. Writes, edits, and coordinates development of MRGESCP documents and deliverables.
  12. May perform specialized activities of a programmatic nature in direct support of the accomplishment of program objectives and protocol.
  13. May supervise student employees, volunteers and/or interns.
  14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to lead and train assigned staff.
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
  • Advanced writing and editorial skills.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in biology, zoology, ecology, fisheries, environmental science, or another related field.
  • Science communication experience.
  • Facilitation experience.
  • Experience creating and manipulating GIS shapefiles.
  • Familiarity with riparian and riverine ecosystems.
